East Grinstead Chess Club is now based at the Glen Vue Centre, Railway Approach, East Grinstead. RH19 1BS. Meets every Monday from 7.30 pm. Ample free parking.
Wander down East Grinstead High Street and you may well see people playing chess outside the Bookshop. Also, East Grinstead Chess Club (founded 1955) meets in Railway Approach in the chess season. Both have excellent players of all ages. But competitive chess in EG predates both:
Astronomer Patrick Moore was born on this day in 1923. He grew up in East Grinstead, where he lived in Worsted Lane. He was asked to take over the nearby observatory, at the age of 14, when the resident astronomer died. He was also a founder member of East Grinstead Chess Club.🔭

East Grinstead Chess club had an outstanding season, winning the coveted McArthur cup for the second year running, beating Hastings & St. Leonards in the final. Huge congratulations to all who played for East Grinstead in the tournament. The club reopens on the 1st September 2025
Who Lived Where in the East Grinstead area?
32: Reginald Broadbent (1906-1988) was British Chess Champion for 1948 & 1950. Born in South Africa he settled in Cheshire, moving to the EG area after WW2, where he lived on the Limes Estate in Felbridge and Priory Road in Forest Row.
Chess Update: East Grinstead Chess Club defeated Lewes 4.5/1.5 in the final of the McArthur Cup, and Dan Rosen has won first prize in the Sir Patrick Moore Memorial Cup. Congratulations to all participants.🏆
Chess Update: East Grinstead 1 has won the second division of the Sussex Chess League, and are promoted to division 1 for next season. Bob Noyce won 1st prize for best individual performance, winning 6/6 matches. EG will play Lewes in the final of the McArthur Cup on 21st May.
Soon after WW2 ended, Reginald Broadbent moved from Yorkshire to the East Grinstead area, living first at Felbridge, and then Forest Row. While living here, he became British Chess Champion twice, in 1948 and 1950. This was five years before the present EG Chess Club was founded.
Looking Back: This snippet appeared in the Daily Mirror on Monday, 13th May 1963. It's fair to say that they didn't subsequently become good friends. Patrick, who co-founded the club, was a County Class chess player, but I imagine that Dr Beeching went in for a lot of sacrifices.
East Grinstead Chess Club defeated Sussex University 5 – 0 in the semi-final of the McArthur cup, progressing to the final, to meet Lewes or Hastings. East Grinstead is at the top of division 2 in the quarter-finals of the Paul Watson Trophy and now the final of the McArthur cup.
Patrick Moore died on this day in 2012. He grew up in East Grinstead, learning his astronomy at the Brockhurst Observatory here, taking over the running of it while he was a teenager, when the resident astronomer died. He was also co-founder of East Grinstead Chess Club...
East Grinstead Chess Club now has a memorial tournament named after one of the club's founders. The Sir Patrick Moore Trophy is open to non-club members and runs annually. On the 9th October Mayor Cllr Frazer Visser presented the club with a cheque for £50 towards the tournament.
Patrick Moore was born 100 years ago today. He grew up in East Grinstead, where his interest in astronomy led to him taking over the running of Brockhurst Observatory from Franks, who died in a road accident. Patrick was 14 at the time. He was also co-founder of EG Chess Club.🔭
Arjun Kolani, the current U14 British Blitz Champion played a simul at The Bookshop in East Grinstead this afternoon. He won all 20 games! Money was raised for the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Club Update: When last season ended prematurely, due to #COVIDー19, the intention was to carry unfinished competitions over to the start of the present (2020/21) season. As the re-start has now been delayed, it has been decided to cancel them and start afresh when play resumes.😷
