Polish 1st Independent Parachute Brigade of General Stanisลaw Sosabowski was transferred under the British command on 6 June 1944. The unit, along with other airborne and land forces, fought in the Market Garden Operation and the Battle of Arnhem. Sosabowski was unjustly made a scapegoat for the failure by Field Marshal Bernard Montgomery.
The Polish Armed Forces made substantial contributions to the Allied victory over Germany during WWII, fighting on land, sea, and in the air.
@Professor_Hal
"Well... it's on."

Do not call me hero,
Each night I stop and pray,
For all the friends I knew and lost,
I survived my longest day
Do not call me hero,
In the years that pass,
For all the real true heroes,
Have crosses, lined up on the grass

Polish Air Force on D-Day โ 6 June 1944
๐ฌ๐ง๐บ๐ธ๐ซ๐ท๐ต๐ฑ
On D-Day 11 of 16 Polish Squadrons flew in support of the Normandy landings.
โข 131 (Polish) Wing (Spitfire IXs): 302, 308 & 317 Squadrons provided low cover over Sword & Juno beaches, fighter sweeps, and ground attack.
โข 133 Wing (Mustangs): 306 & 315 Squadrons escorted gliders for US 82nd & 101st Airborne.
โข 303 Squadron (Spitfire) flew multiple beachhead sorties.
Bomber squadrons also took part: Lancasters of 300 Sqn deceived the Germans, Mosquitos of 305 struck targets, Wellingtons of 304 hunted U-boats, and 301 (1586 Flt) delivered agents to the Resistance.
We know from first hand accounts that many Polish Airmen believed that the Invasion of France was a step closer to going homeโฆ this alas, despite Allied Victory in Europe was not to be.
Please help us fly them home this August.

D-Day in Color: Reinforcements Secure the Beachhead ๐บ๐ธ๐ฌ๐ง
The Normandy beachhead is now firmly in Allied hands as supply convoys, DUKWs, and fresh troops continue moving inland after the initial assault.
German prisoners are gathered under guard while Coast Guard rescue boats and hospital ships work offshore to recover survivors and evacuate the wounded.
A sweeping panoramic view reveals the massive scale of the secured beachhead, now packed with ships, vehicles, supply depots, and the wreckage left behind by the invasion.
The largest amphibious invasion in history was now firmly underway.
This day in history 6 June 1944, #DDay, British soldiers landed in Normandy alongside Allied forces to begin the liberation of Europe ๐ช
Today, we remember their courage, sacrifice, and service ๐ซก
Lest we forget.
Did you know that the first women to land on the Normandy beachhead in June 1944 were nurses of Queen Alexandraโs Imperial Nursing Service?
Their task was to establish a field hospital for 600 wounded soldiers.
They succeeded.
Please remember these heroines who saved lives:
Vandaag 82 jaar geleden kleurde Franse kust โroodโ. Geallieerden probeerden de stijle kust op te komen om de Duitse bunkers uit te schakelen. Het strand lag vol versperringen en mijnen. Niets hielt de Geallieerden tegen.
