An Irish political showdown that makes stepping into the ring with Mike Tyson look like a walk in the park.

If you ever find yourself in deep water and in need of a lifeline, look no further than Irish parliamentarian @kenoflynnTD.

This TD is a political titan — a gladiator who took on @SimonHarrisTD over the punishment meted out to former #Garda officer John Barrett, who made protected disclosures relating to alleged wrongdoing within An Garda Síochána.

O’Flynn delivered a full political broadside, launching into a battle of words that would make the Charge of the Light Brigade look like an English tea party. The exchange visibly rattled #Harris, who squirmed through his responses under the sustained pressure of this constitutional battle for justice.

Barrett has stated that he disclosed what he believed to be wrongful interference by two superiors with his role as protected disclosures manager for former @gardainfo sergeant Maurice McCabe. He denies any wrongdoing and claims that he is being punished through what he describes as an unlawful and flawed investigation initiated after he made those disclosures — essentially for “doing the right thing” and exposing alleged misconduct and unlawful conduct.

The case highlights the severe mistreatment many whistleblowers say they have faced after exposing wrongdoing within the Garda.

Those who speak out often endured extraordinary institutional pressure and personal abuse as a consequence. As a civil servant, Barrett’s case also raises procedural concerns: no “Memorandums for Government” were brought before the cabinet, which could constitute a breach of the 1956 regulations governing such matters.

Furthermore, dismissing Barrett from his position as the suspended Executive Director for Human Resources at An Garda Síochána on 30 June—without proper procedures being followed or an official notice of dismissal being issued—would amount to an unconstitutional and, therefore, unlawful act.

Ireland is either a country governed by laws or it is not.

If the State is not governed by the rule of law, it risks sliding toward something far darker: government by whim rather than by Constitution. The danger is not abstract. It is the slow erosion of the principles that generations of Irish men and women struggled to secure—principles enshrined in the Constitution and defended at great personal cost by those who believed Ireland should be governed by law, not by arbitrary power.

To weaken those safeguards is to weaken the Republic itself. The Constitution is not a decorative document; it is the legal foundation of Irish liberty. It places limits on government, protects individual rights, and ensures that no minister, agency, or official can act above the law. When those limits are ignored or treated as inconvenient, the entire constitutional order is placed at risk.

Perhaps some in government—Mr. Harris among them—believe such risks can be tolerated or managed. But the Irish people should not accept that premise. A Republic survives only so long as its Constitution is respected and its laws are applied equally to all.

Ireland’s democratic future depends on one simple principle: the State must remain firmly bound by the rule of law. Anything less is not merely poor governance—it is a step toward the abandonment of the very freedoms the Constitution was written to protect.

Mr. O’Flynn would get my vote in a flash....

“Excluded From RTE Debate”
Tomorrow night, Prime Time will be hosting the Dublin EU candidate debate. You would imagine that with only 8 spots available, it would be a balanced selection between independents and establishment candidates to give undecided voters a fair chance to get to know all the candidates. However, that’s not what happens.
RTE, in their wisdom, has given the first spots to the current MEPs (that’s three spots gone). The next four spots went to existing TDs, and the last spot to a candidate from the party with the most TDs. This means that although I’m high in the betting and polls, I won’t be allowed on the debate. As a result, you will have 8 candidates who have all been part of the government or opposition and are responsible for the mess we are in.
Three of them are already MEPs just looking to get their jobs back so they can disappear for another 5 years and do very little. Is this what we call democracy? There are other independents who received NO coverage whatsoever from the national broadcaster. How are people like me or other independents ever supposed to get elected to make changes when opportunities are only given to career politicians responsible for the current mess?
All 8 candidates on RTE tomorrow night are won’t use the word 'deportation,'
They all encouraged the immigration crises.
They all encouraged and played a role in the housing crises for five years.
They asked you to remove 'mother,' 'woman,' and 'family' from the constitution and vote YES.
They all want hate speech laws.
They all support part or all of the EU migration pact.
They are all climate alarmists willing to throw farming to the wolves, and none of them can define the word 'woman.' Need I go on?
There is no opposition to these elite 8. Nothing will change when RTE is part of maintaining the status quo.
Bottom line, although I’m predicted to be in the top 4 I’m excluded from the debate and candidates down the bottom with no chance will be on because they already have a TDs job.
Not just me but other independents will not see the inside of the RTE on the important Dublin Debate.
