Last week we calculated the speed of sound in four or five different fluids using sophomore-level physics, nailed them all to ~a percent, and none of the students got up on their desks to shout, "Oh Captain, my Captain." They never carry me out of the classroom on their shoulders
All spring semester I just lie on the floor in front of my class and tell them "It's just Taylor expansions. You're just going to do Taylor expansions, you need to understand Taylor expansions."
When I was a student I thought there was a wide chasm between undergraduate curriculum concepts and research. Now that I teach this stuff, nope. Almost all the stuff in class is used in the lab and in real life.
@buryaafc Hi, is there any way to purchase any Bury Amateur clothing or gear? My father played for the club in the late 1970s, and I'd love to get him a jumper or something. Thanks!
@SileNicChormaic Just some awful performance from precision equipment, yeah. And few recourses available except to refuse acceptance and to send the items back.
@SileNicChormaic ..and I took them apart and re-mated them four or five times. Eventually I separated them and applied engineer's blue to the mounting plate. It turns out that their "precision ground" 3/4" steel plates were only making miniscule amounts of contact when the bolts drew the tables.
To any undergraduate/MSc students - we still have some funding available for internships up to 6 months if you are Ukrainian or have had to leave Russia. Please contact me for details. They can be across any area at @OISTedu.
Retweeting this in honour of Lissajous's birthday today! This is part of a thread so make sure you read the tweet just below it as well describing Lissajous's rather lax approach to teaching!
An annual tradition at the #southpole, watching "The Thing"! It happens after the "last flight" of summer (next flight in 8-months), and the unofficial start of winter. This year, John Carpenter (i.e., the Director of the 1982 version) @Zoom'ed in to do a Q&A! Thanks John!
Weโve spent parts of multiple faculty meetings figuring out how to print fewer teaching/learning resources for our students in the hopes of saving $1000 in our dept. budget. In unrelated news, our athletics program routinely loses over 10 million dollars a year. #academia
