Elle présente les problèmes du Rwanda comme étant des questions ethniques, ce qui est inexact puisque les massacres ont été perpétrés contre les Tutsis et l'opposition." (Kagame)

« Pendant quatre autres jours, les Américains ont semé obstacle après obstacle. Les Britanniques, quant à eux, les appuyaient timidement.

Les Français soutenaient la MINUAR 2 mais sous conditions. Pour leur part, les pays non alignés étaient furieux à cause des retards.

Le FPR a fait publier une déclaration adressée au Conseil de sécurité qui ressemblait étrangement à un manifeste dirigé contre nous.

Ses porte-parole soutenaient que la MINUAR de seconde génération arrivait trop tard pour arrêter les massacres et que, de plus, elle pourrait déstabiliser la lutte du FPR pour se hisser au pouvoir.

En fait, il n'était pas trop tard, car les massacres continueraient pendant des semaines.

Si j'avais été un tant soit peu soupçonneux, j'aurais pu établir un lien entre la position d'obstruction des Américains et le refus du FPR d'accepter la MINUAR 2 plus importante.

Dans la Période précédant la guerre, on avait pu voir l'attaché militaire de l'ambassade américaine se rendre à Mulindi de façon réguliere.

De plus, il existait en Amérique du Nord une diaspora tutsie importante qui appuyait le FPR.

Pendant ce temps, des odeurs de mort continuaient à imprégner la vie quotidienne en Afrique centrale ».

Page 588 : «Qui, au juste, avait tiré ses ficelles tout au long de la campagne? Je plongeai dans des pensées sinistres, me demandant si la campagne et le génocide n'avaient pas été orchestrés pour un retour du Rwanda au statu quo d'avant 1959, époque à laquelle les Tutsis dirigeaient tout.

Les extrémistes Hutus avaient-ils été plus dupes que je ne l'avais été moi-même?

Dix ans plus tard, je ne peux toujours pas éluder cette troublante question, surtout à la lueur des événements qui, depuis, ont eu lieu dans la région ».
