Happy Nelson #MandelaDay!
What happens in prison affects us all.
Today, we honour Nelson Mandela’s legacy by calling for prison systems that uphold human dignity, support rehabilitation, and create safer communities.
“Justice is strongest when it is matched with humanity,” says @Monica_Juma_ in her #MandelaDay message.

Strengthening partnerships for human rights and the rule of law.
On 15 July, OHCHR ESARO's Ethiopia Country Programme met with the leadership of the Addis Ababa Police Commission to discuss enhanced cooperation on human rights, accountability, capacity-building, and community-centred policing.
Together, we can help build public trust and strengthen rights-based law enforcement.

📢📢 Promoting Prison Standards
Dignity must remain at the heart of detention.
Humane prison conditions protect the dignity and rights of people deprived of liberty. Strong prison standards support safe, effective, and rehabilitation-focused correctional systems.
The Nelson Mandela Rules protect the rights of untried prisoners. Stronger coordination and legal support can help address pretrial detention challenges in Ethiopia.
#11NelsonMandelaRules#PretrialDetention
📢📢Reducing Pretrial Detention
Timely justice protects rights.
Prolonged pretrial detention can contribute to prison overcrowding and affect the rights of people awaiting trial. Ensuring timely case processing is essential for a fair and effective justice system.
📢📢Alternatives to Imprisonment
Reducing overcrowding starts with smarter justice.
Prison overcrowding puts pressure on prison management, rehabilitation services, and humane conditions. The impact is greatest on vulnerable groups who require additional care and protection.
📢Access to Justice
Justice begins with access.
Access to justice is a fundamental right. Legal aid helps detainees and prisoners understand their rights, receive fair treatment, and access legal representation throughout the criminal justice process.
An important milestone was marked with the Closure Ceremony of the Technical Assistance Unit (TAU) under the EU Criminal Justice Support Programme in Ethiopia, implemented by @GIZ in consortium with @DCAF.
