Y12 Biologists participated in the Intermediate Biology Olympiad, a national competition run by @RoyalSocBio . One student achieved a silver award, 3 achieved bronze and 4 were awarded highly commended certificates. Congratulations to all.

This was a very large surprise but a very lovely one. The judges will be coming into school in July to see what we do and I’m sure our students will shine through.

Year 12 were modelling the process of translocation in plants today. Having the model in place allowed students to ask questions to check their understanding and to visualise a very tricky concept.

Y12 were investigating how factors affect water transport through plants this morning. They had no method to follow so had to devise their own to decide what to investigate and how. Great to see independence developing in their work.

Year 12 were investigating how water is moved around plants and were marvelling at the intricacies of xylem vessels. Beautiful spirals of lignin visible which strengthen the vessels to avoid collapse.

Y13 were learning about how PCR works today. This is now a process the general public is talking about in daily life but how many of them know how it works?! Y13 do!

Year 12 have made a serial dilution of glucose to make various concentrations to allow them to determine the concentration of an unknown sample tomorrow. Some excellent skills on show this morning.
