The Washington Post interviewed several migrants who crossed into Ceuta, and their testimonies describe unusual permissive conditions on the Moroccan side of the border. Among its reporting:

"Several migrants who spoke to The Post said that security on the Moroccan side of the border was lax and they managed to cross easily. They said they were urged on by social media posts and videos that tapped into deep-seated despair over the future among many of the young Moroccans who rushed into Ceuta."

Ayoub Karabani, 28, who crossed into Ceuta last week, said he encountered no obstacles on the Moroccan side:

"It's weird, I don't understand why they didn't stop us."

Mohammed Kahlil, 25, who swam into Ceuta, also said his route was unobstructed. According to the report, he said the Moroccan government "didn't care" that he crossed, and that it was only after reaching Ceuta that he "saw violence from the Spanish" a sharp contrast, in his view, with the stricter border enforcement he had experienced from Moroccan authorities in the past.

Another migrant, Mohammed Bardi, told The Washington Post that a local politician had encouraged people to go.

How do I know Moroccan authorities are involved in the migration crisis?

1. They are not arresting the trucks transporting migrants to the north.
2. They have not issued a single televised or public warning telling people not to attempt the crossing.
3. No senior official has made a public statement about the crisis yet.
4. The King is spending his vacation just 7 km from Ceuta, where security around the royal residence is at its highest level, yet thousands are reaching Ceuta without a problem.
5. There have been no publicly announced arrests of smugglers or of those organizing and facilitating these crossings.

In a country where the security services monitor roads, checkpoints, and large movements so closely, this level of activity does not happen unnoticed.
