At the half way point of the first season we have exposed and recorded much of the previously excavated portions of the site and begun to investigate as yet unexcavated features.
At the half way point of the first season we have exposed and recorded much of the previously excavated portions of the site and begun to investigate as yet unexcavated features.
We have revealed more about the olive oil production facility than had been known previously: there are square and circular presses and it is unlikely that the presses were arranged in a double battery. Additionally, there appears to have been at least 12 presses at the site.
Ostaju mnoga pitanja o ovom impresivnom zdanju i onima u blizini, uključujući ostatke rimske cisterne i vile.
The ELRI Project will investigate the oil facility and it's relation to surrounding sites. We will begin by clearing and documenting the previously exposed area and preparing a conservation plan for this and the cistern.
We look forward to updating you in the coming weeks!
Investigations at Barbariga begin next week! Some site history beforehand:
The Roman period olive oil production facility was identified through early explorations in 1953-54. The results were only disseminated through a museum display in Pula with a site plan and some photos.
Many questions remain about this impressive site and those nearby, including the remains of a Roman cistern and villa. The villa was excavated in 1901 but is now in a poor state of preservation. Survey conducted by Fabian Welc in 2023/24 revealed additional unexplored remains.
Nakon uvodnih istraživanja i geofizičkih pregleda u 2023. i 2024. godini, projekt ELRI započet će s iskopavanjem kompleksa rimske vile i uljare u Barbarigi u svibnju.
Following initial investigations and geophysical surveys in 2023/24 the ELRI project will begin excavation of the Barbariga complex in May. Join us as we investigate one of the largest Roman-period oil production centres in Croatia.
