Coming out can be one of the most vulnerable moments in a young person’s life. Many LGBTQ+ teens worry their parents will see them differently — or stop loving them altogether.

Experts say the most powerful response is also the simplest: be supportive. Lead with “I’m glad you told me.” Listen without judgment. Keep communication open. And above all, make sure your child knows they are loved — exactly as they are.

When young people feel accepted at home, they build resilience that carries them everywhere else.
