Thank you International Federation of Eating Disorders Dietitians (IFEDD) for putting out a clear statement rejecting the dangerous @AmerAcadPeds guidelines.

Ive seen @TopGunMovie Maverick 5 times. Every single time, I say “common Rooster” and get scared when that last bandit comes on screen. Such a good movie.
In my office, I regularly see severely ill teens with eating disorders that were triggered by a pediatrician telling them to lose weight.
The new AAP guidelines promoting bariatric surgery & weight loss medication for children will only create more eating disorders. 💔
@AmerAcadPeds No 2 yr old needs a focus of weight loss when their body and brain is still developing! No teen/pre teen needs to have wt loss surgery before they even have had a chance to experience life. Are your recommendations protecting peds or protecting your pockets?
@AmerAcadPeds Your new recommendations are horrifying. Like most RDNs I was trained in the “traditional” method which focuses on weight and body size as a measure of a persons health. In year two of my career, I worked at a pediatric hospital and outpatient clinic. 🧵
Many started sneaking food, asking for seconds at places their parents weren’t around and started describing in great detail what they would eat as soon as they were done with the program. Growing bodies do NOT need to lose weight. A focus on this will only lead to more EDs
Parents also shared that they felt they had tried every thing we recommended but didnt want their kids to live a life without delicious food, without play foods and without celebration foods.
I saw the direct impacts of these recommendations on not only the parents/caregivers but even more so on the clients themselves - these two, five, seven and up to 17 year olds. Parents shared they felt like they were inadequate for not being able to provide “healthy food”
It was here that I really started to see just how harmful weight centric recommendations are especially to the kiddos that are given “weight loss recommendations”. I worked in clinics that ran family oriented interventions with regular weigh-ins and food recommendations
As an eating disorder therapist, the amount of clients who’s eating disorders were triggered by a pediatrician visit is staggering.
The @AmerAcadPeds KNOWS that weight loss for teens leads to increased EDs (& ironically leads them to be higher weight) but I guess $ is louder.
I can’t stop thinking about the fact that the @AmerAcadPeds has 0 qualms about confidently putting out guidelines for TWO YEAR OLDS to receive weight loss interventions and… are not mortified to do so?
I wonder how many of these doctors have financial ties to the diet industry.
