Construction of a regional blood bank to serve Lira Regional Referral Hospital is 98% complete, a major boost for access to safe and timely blood transfusion services in the Lango sub-region.
The facility, located at Lira University, is part of a government programme to strengthen blood storage and distribution nationwide and reduce shortages in health facilities. Project coordinator Fahad Kisosonkole says construction began in April 2025 and is on track for completion by July, with Shs1 billion already spent and another Shs1 billion expected to finish remaining works.
The Ministry of Health says the regional blood banks are meant to improve emergency response and ensure reliable access to safe blood, with plans to add staff housing and specialized equipment next financial year. Hospital director Andrew Odur says the facility will help meet rising blood demand caused by maternal complications, accidents and other critical conditions, while stakeholders stress the need for close coordination as the project nears completion.
