Actor Elijah Canlas, who plays Edgar “Edjop” Jopson in the 2026 film Edjop, joins the Akbayan Youth protest rally at the EDSA Shrine on Sunday, a day before the anniversary of the Trillion Peso March and the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law.

Youth and student leaders called for the fight against corruption to be completed by charging, arresting, and jailing corrupt politicians, including those who have fled abroad, and passing a genuine anti-political dynasty law to dismantle clan- and patronage-based politics.

#EDJOP hits you right in the gut.

It is a very human film about a young human of the past intended for us, young humans in the present.

Going into the cinema, tbh I only knew Edjop as this student leader activist who was killed during the Martial Law. I knew this because he was a famous graduate of Ateneo.

So I very much appreciated how the film showed how he is a human, like all of us, not just an activist. He is a son, a husband, a father, not just a Filipino. There was so much tension in it—him being a son of a capitalist, an older brother, a father to his children and supposedly their protector, not just a champion of the poor—and that's what drove the film's plot.

In its course, I also embraced Joyette's story—his daughter. I didn't even know he had children so as the film started, I was curious how they would tie it all up together. And boy, they tied it oh so beautifully.

At the end of it, I was crying my eyes out.

I personally loved the bit of Edjop talking to his younger sisters and his daughter in the final arc. He was supposedly talking to them but he was also talking to us, the present youth, whom he passed the baton to. At some point, he was talking directly to the camera, similar to how Bong Joonho did the last scene of the Memories of Murder.

I felt heartened and seen in how he encouraged us to be brave and continue the fight but not necessarily follow his footsteps. To find our own way to become the force of good the country needs us to be. To be those "men and women for others" the hill taught us to be.

Director Katski Flores is setting the record straight: her film “Edjop” is neither a rigid documentary nor a loose piece of historical fiction.

Speaking about the creative process behind bringing the story of student leader and revolutionary Edgar Jopson to the screen, Flores described the project as occupying a nuanced space in between, one rigorously anchored in historical reality yet dramatized through the lens of human memory.
“It’s not a documentary, but it’s not historical fiction,” Flores explained, noting that the project is “definitely based on research.”

To ensure authenticity, the production team didn’t just rely on dedicated researchers; they went straight to the source.

Alongside Joyette Jopson, Edjop’s eldest daughter and the film’s executive producer, Flores detailed an extensive interview process with Edjop’s siblings and widow to anchor the film’s emotional core.

“I spent four weeks, four hours per session interviewing Tita Joy [Edgar’s wife],” she shared.

The screenplay also draws heavily from Benjamin Pimentel’s definitive biography of Edjop, “UG: An Underground Tale,” along with a wealth of archival photos.

While historical films like “Katips” and “Quezon” embraced wider creative liberties, Flores insists “Edjop” remains firmly grounded in reality.

She acknowledged taking some creative liberties “in terms of how I would interpret or visualize how I imagine the scene played out,” but clarified that these choices were made strictly “for [the] purpose of narrative” and to serve as a “dramatic engine.”

Ultimately, Flores says the film stays much “closer to what actually happened” and stands as a deeply personal project “inspired by the truth, inspired by memories of real events.”

“Edjop,” starring Elijah Canlas, Jodi Sta. Maria, Kakie Pangilinan, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Nour Hooshmand, and Cedrick Juan, opens today in cinemas nationwide. Student audiences can avail of a special ₱200 rate for the first five days of the film’s release.
