[#PaxSilica] We ask for a few minutes of your time to learn about what is happening in our country today.
In 2024, we were united in New Clark City. It was one for the books. Years after the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, the venue once again opened its gate for history to be made.
But buried under the cheers and celebrations lies a history that many have yet to confront.
Long before New Clark City became known for world-class events, the land in Capas, Tarlac had long been home to Aeta Indigenous communities. During the development of New Clark City, Aeta groups and Indigenous rights advocates raised concerns over displacement, unresolved ancestral land claims, and the loss of their homes and livelihoods. While the government has disputed allegations of forced displacement, the issue of ancestral land rights remains unresolved for many communities until now.
Now, another chapter of horror is unfolding.
Beginning in December 2026, the Philippines is set to participate in Pax Silica, an international initiative that aims to strengthen AI and semiconductor supply chains by securing access to critical minerals, energy, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure.
The Philippines is rich in natural resources including nickel, copper, cobalt, and chromite. Minerals that are essential for semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries, and AI technologies. Because of these resources, our country has become increasingly important in the global race for AI.
But we have to ask: who truly benefits?
Communities in Tarlac continue to rely heavily on agriculture for their livelihood. We, and many Filipinos fear that further industrial expansion could affect farmers, Indigenous peoples, and local communities through land conversion, relocation, or environmental impacts. These concerns deserve public discussion as projects move forward. We deserve to know what is happening.
We are told that a 1.6-hectare AI hub represents “innovation” and “progress.”
But innovation should never come at the expense of people's homes, livelihoods, or rights.
At a time when Filipinos are already experiencing extreme heat, rising electricity demand, and recurring power interruptions in many parts of the country, it is also worth asking how energy-intensive AI infrastructure will affect our already strained resources.
We believe that development should improve people's lives and not leave communities behind.
Patuloy tayong makilahok sa mga ganitong usapin. Everything is political. Even KPOP has always been political. We cannot celebrate communities while remaining silent when those same communities are affected by issues that matter.
Read. Listen. Question. Speak up.
Because progress means nothing if it is built on forgotten histories.
