Some conversations are easy to have. Others need a safe space before they can even begin. 💜
Last week, at Torosei Primary School, we sat together with 69 adolescents, 34 girls and 35 boys, aged 12–16 and began a conversation that isn’t always easy to have openly.
“What does it mean to communicate?”
“How do we know our boundaries?”
“How can we protect ourselves?”
In a Maasai community where conversations around growing up, sexuality and relationships can often be shaped by culture, family expectations and traditions, creating a space where young people can ask questions and learn without fear or embarrassment can be incredibly meaningful.
So, we talked.
Not at them. With them. 🗣️
We explored HIV and STI prevention, testing, proper use of condoms, preventing unintended pregnancy, consent, personal boundaries and what respectful communication really looks like.
And then the room came alive.
Questions came.
Ideas were shared.
Misconceptions were unpacked.
Different perspectives were heard.
For some young people, it may have simply been a school session. But for others, it was an opportunity to ask something they had been wondering about, hear an accurate answer, or realise that it is okay to seek information about their health.
That is the power of Comprehensive Sexuality Education.
It isn’t just about information.
It is about giving young people the words to communicate, the knowledge to make informed decisions, the confidence to understand boundaries and the ability to know when and where to seek support. 🌱
And in communities where some conversations may traditionally happen quietly—or not at all—creating a safe, age-appropriate space for young people to speak and be heard is a powerful step.
At Torosei, 69 adolescents had that space.
They asked.
They listened.
They learned.
And most importantly, they knew their questions mattered. 💜
Because sometimes, changing a young person’s future doesn’t begin with a big intervention.
Sometimes, it begins with creating a room where they feel safe enough to ask, “Can we talk about this?”

DG for Health Dr Patrick Amoth clarifies that while blood donation itself is free, charges associated with transfusion cover the screening of donated blood for transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs) to ensure it is safe for patients.
“You are not paying for the blood itself.”

Somewhere in Kenya right now:
A woman is self-injecting contraception at home instead of taking a day off for clinic. 🏠💉
Someone else is doing an HIV self-test in their room.
You won’t see them in headlines. But they show up in data — if we measure the right things. 📊
At the @MOH_Kenya@MoH_DRMH HPDG Community of Practice, we talked about one big question:
How do we know self-care is actually working?
Developing policy is half the journey.
The other half is measuring, learning, and improving.
Highlights:
✅ Reviewed the Draft Kenya Self-Care Investment Case for DMPA-SC, HIV self-testing, HPV self-sampling
✅ Validated the Self-Care Progress Tracking Tool making it simpler + stakeholder-focused
✅ Agreed we need a national baseline to map self-care data + integrate indicators into routine systems
Because data doesn’t just tell a story.
It shapes decisions, unlocks investment, and builds stronger health systems. 💙
