@DanielAJones93@_bonaventurian Stoics carried out a far-reaching synthesis of elements of Pre-Socratic thought and formulated a powerful hermeneutics, one needs to appreciate the force of that school, though of course the Platonists did have the last word.
@DanielAJones93@_bonaventurian I'm broad minded enough to say that there's room for a Stoic viewpoint that isn't entirely reducible to the Platonic incorporation of it.
@_bonaventurian@DanielAJones93 Ironically, the very first thing that piqued my interest in Proclus were some brief remarks by Deleuze in Difference and Repetition.
@DanielAJones93 Ancient materialisms, like Stoicism and Epicureanism, were much richer than contemporary reductive materialism. Of course, contemporary "Stoics" show little interest in Stoic physics, despite the importance ancient Stoics ascribed to it. Stoic logic was also very insightful.
@DanielAJones93 Of course, with the requisite subtlety one can go quite far with Stoicism. It wouldn't have been as successful as it was for centuries if it had been as doltish as most of its contemporary advocates.

Iamblichus, 1500 years ago, explicitly telling us that yes it is possible to reconstruct damaged traditions:
"For all these reasons, then, let us call upon the gods as our leaders, entrust both ourselves and our discourse to them, and follow wherever they may lead. We should not be deterred by the fact that this school has long been neglected; that it has been hidden beneath estranged teachings and certain secret symbols; that it has been overshadowed by many false and spurious writings; and that it has been obstructed by many other difficulties of the same kind. The will of the gods is enough for us, and with it one can endure difficulties even more perplexing than these."

I highly advise you to save this quote for future use when arguing with those guys who say "but your line of transmission is broken bro, just become a sufi bro"
