England got off to a winning start with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia. The result showcased everything Three Lions supporters believe this England team can be.
In particular, England were outstanding in the second half. They pressed aggressively, attacked with confidence and finally seemed to play with the “handbrake off” as fans have demanded for years.
Going forward, England looked dangerous. Defensively, though, there were still moments that Thomas Tuchel will want to address sooner rather than later.
Ghana’s opening match was very different. The Black Stars had to dig deep before snatching a dramatic 1-0 win over Panama thanks to a stoppage-time winner.
It was not always pretty, but tournament football rarely is. Sometimes, the ability to grind out three points tells you just as much about a team as a dominant performance.
As a result, this sets up a fascinating battle in Boston.

Securing a decisive victory at the NRG Stadium in Houston is the immediate requirement for Portugal as they look to correct a stumbling start to their World Cup 2026 Group K campaign.
Roberto Martínez’s side sit tied for second with a single point after being held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by DR Congo on matchday one—a performance where the Seleção failed to generate meaningful attacking fluidity, registering just 0.65 expected goals (xG) and attempting a solitary shot in the first half.
With Colombia leading the group on three points, Portugal cannot afford another tactical misstep if they are to retain control of their round of 16 progression.
Standing in their way is an Uzbekistan side fighting for tournament survival under the defensive guidance of Fabio Cannavaro.
Making their historic debut as the first Central Asian nation to reach a World Cup finals, the White Wolves sit bottom of the group following a 3-1 defeat to Colombia.

La Roja supporters will tell you there is no need to panic after the draw with Cape Verde.
They are probably right.
The reality is Spain were not terrible in their opening game. Far from it. They controlled possession, created opportunities and spent most of the afternoon looking like a team that would eventually score.
The problem was the “eventually” never arrived.
Saudi Arabia will have watched that match with interest.
If Uruguay struggled to break them down, they will fancy their chances of making life awkward for Spain too. This is not a side that minds defending for long spells. In fact, they seem to enjoy it.

@fitzmagic13 The group is just average. Turkey are OK, but US are much better. The only fair claim you hear about the quality of these teams is Paraguay beat Brazil, etc in qualifying. But then they've only beaten Peru, Turkey, Mexico, Panama in their last 35 games away from home soil.
@OverEHill Argentina, France, England. An entirely difderent level that the US defence wouldn't handle at their best. There are others, but they've not yet performed. And to say they just couldn't hang with them is strictly untrue... But they'd be clear underdogs.
@Footballtweet What on earth is this good, clean fun? Have they not heard of a sticky indoor fan park where you get covered in beer by university students who only experience football once every four years? #ThreeLions
The Tartan Army will not thank me for this, but this feels like the exact sort of game that keeps them awake at night.
Not because Scotland are being outclassed.
Not because they do not belong at this level.
But because Morocco are annoyingly good and they most definitely aren’t Haiti.
The Atlas Lions have spent the last few years ruining comfortable narratives. Belgium found that out. Spain found that out. Portugal found that out.
Brazil nearly found it out a few days ago.
The problem for Scotland is that Morocco are not the type of team you can simply overwhelm with effort and noise.
If international football was decided by passion, the Tartan Army would probably have a star above the badge by now.
Unfortunately, Achraf Hakimi and his teammates do not particularly care how loudly Flower of Scotland is being sung.

The United States and Australia both got off to winning starts in their 2026 World Cup campaigns, which is great news for them and slightly less great news for everyone else in their group.
A week ago, there was plenty of focus on how these teams might begin their World Cup campaigns. Now the conversation has shifted.
The question is no longer whether they belong here. It is whether either side can take control of the group before the final round of matches.

Mexico and South Korea head into this Group Stage clash of the 2026 World Cup knowing that every point is becoming increasingly valuable as the tournament begins to take shape.
Mexico made a solid start to their campaign and will be looking to build on that momentum.
Another positive result would leave El Tri in a strong position ahead of their final group fixture and bring the knockout rounds firmly into focus.
South Korea, meanwhile, have their own ambitions of reaching the next stage and know that a victory here could significantly boost their own chances.
With the group still finely balanced, there is little room for error and plenty to play for.

For Canada, the equation is a simple one. Win against Qatar and a place in the 2026 World Cup knockout stages could be within touching distance.
As one of the tournament co-hosts, Canada arrived with plenty of expectation on their shoulders.
A draw in their opening match kept things ticking over, but three points here would put them in a strong position heading into the final round of group fixtures.
Qatar find themselves in a similar situation after also opening their campaign with a draw.
Defeat would leave their hopes hanging by a thread, while victory would throw Group B wide open and hand them a genuine shot at reaching the last 16.
