@PCBounds @and_furiouser @LightningShade0 Of course. Lots of thresholds of various sorts. Costs. Optics. Efficacy. Undermining of better change. BUT NOT WHETHER DRYFUS GETS TO DO STRAIGHT UP BLACKFACE!
If you’re acting shocked about identity based casting requirements like it’s some new woke phenomenon you’re just saying you know fuck all about casting. Dryfus can’t be as ignorant as he acts in that clip, but he’s happy to take advantage of the folks who are.
@PCBounds @and_furiouser @LightningShade0 But I’m not here much longer for that. This is the fakers website now bought and paid for with little blue checks to show you’ll never go against the company line. 🤷♂️
@PCBounds @and_furiouser @LightningShade0 I’m here to defend good debate from bullshit fakers. I’m not here to defend the Oscar’s or their near toothless new policy. I’m here to defend the history of arguments and ideas that people just fucking ignore in favor of made up dunks.
@and_furiouser @PCBounds If you have a "no best picture for movies with unreconstructed black face in them" is that an assessment of the quality of the movies that meet that criteria. In an ethical sense yes, but aesthetically no.
@and_furiouser @PCBounds Again, these criteria are baselines for entry to the category, not the metric by which the show is judged, right? Unless I misread the documents.
@and_furiouser @PCBounds But this is what endless goalpost moving looks like, me having to endlessly remind folks that I didn't shift the topic I just chased the OP with objections some of which they supposedly asked for.
@and_furiouser @PCBounds If they weren't connected, via the debate around who can play which characters and why that was central to the clip that started this whole shitstorm, then Kmele wouldn't have thrown out that gif as a "joke". Jokes read when they're connected.
@and_furiouser @PCBounds And the answer is they work harder to try to find a deaf actor to fill the role, working with the deaf community to the point where the community is satisfied that they tried before they go with a non-deaf actor. Is that draconian?
@and_furiouser @PCBounds I don't think we have to confuse this with thinking the art is better, it's more like robust proactive non-discrimination hiring practices. If people wanted I could explain, for example, how it works when a company tries to cast a play with deaf characters.
