@sentient_soup Absolutely, remote working for admin tasks can work. Not always though, there is a huge amount of learning that happens in an office, especially for students or NQSW that is not the same remote.
Not everyone has an appropriate/confidential home environment to work from as well

Is anyone else seeing the current trend of Social Worker applicants asking to work completely remotely? Not just home working but not wanting to do any face to face work with people. I'm struggling to see how this fits with our SW values and ethics. What's everyone's thoughts?

@sentient_soup Remote first isn't always an option either, there are people who cannot or will not engage with virtual communications. Also, there are dangers in some situations of virtual only work that needs to be considered. It's definitely a person by person decision based on their need

@Foreman1David True, I think we've moved too far towards that model and need to move back toward different case management models to effectively use people's skills and get back to Social Work's roots.

@RITB_ Definitely looked at this as there are some people who prefer virtual contact but there are not enough to warrant workers who are entirely remote. The majority of those who are accessing services want to see people f2f or the work is of a nature that cannot be completed remotely

@skerntian That's good. I'm hoping it's not becoming too common but have received several applications just in the past week with this as a stipulation as well as multiple ones in the last year.

I am in agreement with you all around the need to see people. As a profession our work is built on relationships, trust, advocating, understanding body language and putting the person central. We did virtual work as a necessity over the pandemic but it's not best practice.

@TeriMcD66357121 It is actually starting to concern me that people think they can be a Social Worker and not meet the individuals they're working with. How can you be person centred if you won't meet the person?

@WylieAnge I don't think anyone's expecting people to work from offices the majority of the time, although there is a time and place for it for peer support etc. The applications we are seeing are stating no face to face work, which is not meeting service users, which doesn't work.
