Sanctions enforcement extends beyond ports.

At sea, authorities verify documentation, vessel identity and flag status to ensure compliance with international and EU measures.

During its latest Flag Verification Boarding, the EU’s Operation IRINI identified documentation inconsistencies that reinforced suspicions that the sanctioned MV SOUTH STAR was operating without nationality.

We have agreed on the 21st sanctions package against Russia.

It delivers sweeping measures targeting Moscow’s financial system, its military-industrial complex and energy sector, that keep Russia's war economy running.

We are hitting Putin where it hurts most: cutting off the financial lifelines he relies on to sustain his war.

This is not the end of the road on sanctions. We are already working on the next steps. The EU must be ready to respond to any further Russian escalation.

During the unveiling of AAROH – Annual Report on Mine Closure, where the Implementation Agreement for Technical Cooperation on Closed Coal Mines between the Ministry of Coal and GIZ was signed, Dr. Ewa Suwara, Deputy Head of the European Union Delegation to India, delivered a special address.

She reaffirmed the European Union's commitment to sustainable mine closure, highlighting that all 27 EU Member States support the initiative. She emphasized that successful mine closure requires not only environmental restoration but also inclusive policies, community participation, and a just transition for workers.

Furthermore she acknowledged coal's vital role in India's energy landscape and described scientific mine closure as a responsible and forward-looking approach. Emphasizing the shared commitment of India and the European Union, she said that successful mine closure must go beyond environmental restoration to include workers, local communities, and inclusive policies, drawing on Europe's experience of a just transition.

The second technical session on "Building Partnerships for Sustainable Mine Closure & Repurposing" brought together eminent experts to discuss strengthening India–Germany cooperation for responsible and sustainable mine closure. The session featured insightful deliberations by Mr. Thomas McClenaghan, European Union Delegation to India; Ms. Pamela Baijal, Deputy Head of Cooperation, German Embassy; Mr. Abhinav Jain, Project Director, GIZ India; and Mr. Stefan Kliesch, Head of Energy, KfW India.

The panel acknowledged India's scale as one of the world's largest coal-producing nations and reaffirmed that the European Union and Germany are committed to continuing their partnership with India through knowledge exchange, technical cooperation and shared learning.

The experts emphasized that mine closure is a gradual and carefully planned transition, requiring long-term structural transformation with workers and local communities at its core.

They noted that coal has played a defining role in India's development and that today's collaboration marks the beginning of a new chapter in India–Germany cooperation for scientific mine closure, ecological restoration, resilient post-mining landscapes and sustainable livelihoods.
