Iodine deficiency is still a public health problem. EUthyroid2 works together with the Iodine Coalition Europe, and we aim to promote the use of salt iodisation, including the use of #iodised salt in processed foods and #iodine fortification of specific food groups.

In Denmark, salt is iodised, yet there is still a need to focus on adequate daily iodine intake. This applies if you plan to become pregnant or you opt to change your diet to more plant-based with less dairy and fish," says Gitte Ravn-Haren, EUthyroid2 partner.

At the Annual Meeting of the Arbeitskreis Jodmangel, EUthyroid2 was presented by Henry Völzke, EUthyroid2 Coordinator. It was highlighted that it is crucial to have mandatory salt iodisation policies and eliminate the regulatory barriers to the wider use of iodised salt.

As there is a trend towards plant-rich diets, fortification offers a simple solution to prevent missing out essential micronutrients, such as iodine. Iodine fortification of plant-based dairy alternatives is recommended by the WHO. Always check the label! #Fortification#HaDEA
Today is World Iodine Deficiency Prevention Day. We want to highlight the importance of iodine intake for young women, and we also want to congratulate Sarah Bath, University of Surrey, who has been awarded the 2025 Silver Medal for scientific excellence in iodine nutrition.
Prof. Henry Völzke, EUthyroid2 Project Coordinator, highlights that the widespread consumption of ready-made meals, usually produced without iodised salt, and less consumption of dairy, eggs, and fish, especially among young people, may increase the risk of iodine deficiency.
As we are approaching World Iodine Deficiency Prevention Day, we want to highlight that EUthyroid2 works to take steps to tackle iodine deficiency. EUthyroid2 is a member of Iodine Coalition Europe, a partnership dedicated to ensuring adequate iodine nutrition in Europe.
Dr. Henry Völzke, Coordinator, EUthyroid2, partner of the Iodine Coalition Europe, and other members of the Coalition, met with the Cabinet of Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi, represented by Mr. Flavio Facioni, in Brussels, 18 September, to discuss iodine deficiency in Europe.
The economic burden of iodine deficiency and thyroid disease: In Germany, an average of 90,000 thyroidectomies (mainly due to #nodules and #goitre). With our interventions on iodine nutrition, we expect that young people will benefit from an improved #iodine status. #IDD#HaDEA
More iodine is needed during pregnancy to ensure the healthy development of the baby’s brain from conception until the first 1,000 days of life. At EUthyroid2, we work to educate young people about iodine nutrition. #nutrition#iodine#HaDEA
