In closing out of tonight's final #EDLR5402 course, I am reminded of how thankful I am for my network of UCAPP colleagues and professors, @BernsteinCT@FredEnde@larrydlewis2424 !
I strive to be a forever learner and leader when it comes to social justice and equity. #ChangeAgent
Great to hear everyone's ideas on how to further their professional learning as a leader. Read, stay current on research and practice, network, ask questions, find a mentor, reflect on strengths and weaknesses. #EDLR5402#BetterTogether
Principals wear many hats.. even a learner. Principal PDL is crucial.
According to research by Matthews and Crow, "A principal has 8 major roles - a learner, a culture builder, an advocate, a leader, a mentor, a supervisor, a manager, and a politician."
#EDLR5402
Great comment from @ErinnLFallon tonight, "Make a safe space first, instead of working to make the content safe." This is truly how we will make equity conversations productive and impactful. #EDLR5402
Riordan, Klein, & Gaynor brought up the need behind students' voice in PDL “We need to expand the voices engaged in creating and understanding PD; teachers need to be involved at all levels.. and students can provide rich data about the alignment of design and practice” #EDLR5402
As I think about becoming a social justice leader, I resonate with Murray-Johnson and Guerra's statement.
"It is important to bear in mind that each person’s starting place may be different; everyone is fearful in starting out."
#EDLR5402#differentiatePD
The true work of equity is about removing and eliminating barriers. We need to think and plan for how we can mitigate the hurt students are experiencing right now. They need us right now. #EDLR5402
Thank you @drncgarrett for engaging with us in #EDLR5402 tonight. Heading into week 5 of UCAPP and reflecting on your initial comment of "It is not easy work." So grateful for the opportunity to have these tough conversations and develop myself as a leader.
As I think about this upcoming school year, I know what I'm striving for with my students.
"We aren't currently providing students with the opportunity to think critically." @FredEnde#EDLR5402#changeisneeded
Learned a lot from Rodriguez's article on Sociotransformative Constructivism. Stressed the importance of learning that is "minds-on" and "hands-on".. As educators and leaders, we need to think about how to make each lesson more "minds-on" #EDLR5402
Reflecting on Jim Knight’s statement of “even when teachers want to implement a new program, they may not have the energy needed to put that program into practice.”
We need to support the WHOLE teacher through professional learning, including their “emotional fortitude” #EDLR5402
Change is needed.
“Taking an inquiry stance means that teachers challenge the purposes and underlying assumptions of educational change efforts rather than simply helping to specify or carry out the most effective methods of predetermined ends.” -Cochran-Smith & Lytle #EDLR5402
Leading teachers into PDL based on inquiry can really allow them to grow. “Research was a means by which teachers could become more self-critical and self-conscious.”- Cochran-Smith & Lytle #EDLR5402
Biggest take away from @thelearningloop and #EDLR5402 tonight - trust comes from vulnerability and strength. Show up as a leader who doesn’t know everything and help staff see their progression over time. #relationshipbuilding
Sometimes leaders get caught up in those staff who are the loudest, instead of the majority. Need resilience and patience through the storming phase. Still reflecting on this lesson from @thelearningloop#EDLR5402
"In the stretch for perfection, we slow down progress." - @thelearningloop
Instead we need to create a safe space to take risks and try new things. Creating a culture for learning is key! #EDLR5402#constantlearner
@thelearningloop connects to our #EDLR5402 conversation about the importance of time and pre-planning! This is something I will sure remember!
“It's essential to ensure that time for the professional learning you design is blocked out early in the calendar and treated as sacred.”
