“This season of my life has forced me to reflect on a lot about love, self worth and being chosen for a lifetime. I’ve realized we fight to stay where we are tolerated instead of where we are celebrated.” — Annie Idibia

Buying a car is no small feat, it’s a serious investment that needs to be done with caution, here is the right way to go about purchasing a vehicle and what precautions to take.
Firstly, request the VIN number from the dealer, it is a 17-digit code found on the door card and just behind the windshield of the driver’s side of any car. If the dealer cannot or will not provide it to you, run.
Once you get the VIN, run it through a VIN checker (Carfax, AutoCheck, CarVertical, EpicVIN, etc.). It will give you the full history of the car prior to it coming to Nigeria, match the details to the car and if it’s an auction car that was sold damaged, you should see pictures on the report.
The VIN will give you a good idea of what to expect, if it checks out, go ahead and book a physical inspection of the car, i’ll recommend first timers or those who aren’t familiar with what to check to contract people who do like @autochef__ who i personally employ to help check out vehicles for me.
These people will check the car for chassis damage, out of place welds, double paint coats, rust, amongst other things and ensure the car you’re inspecting is top notch. They will then do a mechanical inspection which includes but isn’t limited to using an OBD tool to read the engine data amongst other vehicle data — if the car is misfiring or has any faults, it will show up and give you the necessary information to make a good decision. I would recommend someone like @autochef__ because they aren’t swayed by small bribes to pass a car without a proper check, their brand rep means everything to them meanwhile road side mechanics aren’t the same.
After the mechanical inspection comes the road test, which should also be done by whomever you contract, they’ll watch for an unbalanced ride, sounds coming from beneath the car or around it, note if the air conditioning system is functional amongst other factors.
Upon completion of the physical inspection, you negotiate based on what you’ve found wrong with the car assuming it has any faults, if the price makes sense to you — pay and take your baby home with you.
NOTE: You should always service your car first thing after you purchase it! Preventive maintenance will do you well in the long run. Lastly, registration if the vehicle, ensure you have all the required documentation in your car. @autochef__ also covers these, i cannot recommend him enough, he’s someone who i can trust 10000% with my brand image.
In summary:
- Vin check FIRST
- Physical and mechanical inspection done by a contracted inspector like @autochef__ (my personal recommendation due to past experience)
- Road test by the inspector
- Negotiation based on any negative feedback from the car
- Payment
- Preventive maintenance
- Registration in line with national standards.
Congratulations, you have successfully bought a car! More keys to you 🎉.
