Mental disorders run in families in a way that is part specific and part transdiagnostic. If a parent is affected with a mental disorder, the offspring have triple the risk of the same disorder, but also double the risk of other mental disorders. https://t.co/9FDcOt9TVz
🧵 (7/7) Instead of increasing symptoms in established risk groups (like familial history of mental illness), the pandemic led to a redistribution of depressive symptoms burden towards segments of the youth population previously considered to be low-risk.
🧵 (6/7) Our results provide reassurance about the wellbeing of children of parents with mental illness during a period of restricted access to resources outside the family.
The much talked about youth mental health crisis post COVID looks much less dramatic in longitudinal data: a small increase, limited to low-risk females. There was no change in depression among youth at high risk or in males. @ProjectFORBOW@CambUP_Psych
