The O Level was never designed as a universal school-leaving qualification. In Britain, where it originated, it was intended for roughly the top 20% of pupils on the academic grammar school track. The remaining 80% followed vocational and technical pathways. Yet Zimbabwe persists with the fiction that every child should clear an examination never meant for everyone. The predictable result is that fewer than a third “pass”, while the majority are casually branded failures.

Rural industrialisation begins by abandoning this absurdity. Every province should define its own labour absorption strategy around its comparative advantages, whether agriculture, mining, fishing or manufacturing. A minority should pursue the academic route. The majority should graduate with recognised certificates of vocational or technical competence, developed and championed by industry itself. That is how productive labour is created and productive labour is how economies grow.

There was a time Freeman Chari @freemanchari shared his inspiring journey of breaking into tech. I don’t know if the thread is still up, but boy… that story lit a undying fire in me.

As a Chartered Accountant, I decided to go beyond just accounting principles. I started learning tech skills I could actually leverage.

Fast forward I now implement accounting systems and solutions end-to-end, automating processes, and delivering real solutions for small and medium businesses and within my audit teams.

I am no longer just using systems anymore. I now understand both the backend and frontend deeply.

I have also been heavily involved in audit transformation projects, playing a key role in rolling out tech-led audit methodologies and training teams on data driven audit methodologies.

All of this started because Freeman openly shared his story. I am forever grateful and I still remind myself of it often.

I would like Cabinet, Parliament and council to sit with this photograph for an afternoon.

In fact, every high school teacher, whatever the subject, should ask students to write an essay on what they see here. The answers would probably take us closer to the solution to Zimbabwe’s problems than most policy papers.

Every boardroom should spend time with it too. For good measure, the Zimra board should take it on a weekend retreat and ask its economists to calculate how much OK has paid in taxes over the past decade.

Then they should look again at the pavement outside.

I think if Zumbani was in western world, someone would made a killing during Covid.

But even upto today we still use it same way it was used 100 years ago by our forefathers, no "take this Zumbani twice a day for flu" in pharmacies.

We import 90% of our medicines but Zumbani for example we have it, mumvee we have it, those who came before us gave us pointers, but we never improved their findings. Whats wrong with us? Could it be our education system?
