Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was reminded of Sour Widows’ REVIVAL OF A FRIEND (2024), and now there are 6 again. I didn’t love it as much as their previous EP but the recipe (~Veruca Salt harmonies meet Codeine tempos) really works for me. #5DebutAlbums2026
Hammered Hulls’ debut CAREENING (2022) does exactly what its title promises, careens through a dozen blistering tracks built on a solid Dischord Records foundation. Extra points because Mary Timony on bass. Love it — probably my top pick.

I’ve hesitated to vote for mid/late-career solo debuts, but because nobody loves Kim Deal more than I do, NOBODY LOVES YOU MORE (2024) is testing that principle. I’m not sure I can honestly identify 5 to rank higher! #5DebutAlbums2026
Titanic: VIDRIO (2023) — I. la Católica and Mabe Fratti’s collaborative debut is going to be near the top of my list, thanks in large part to one track, “Cielo Falso,” but the whole album is great. #5DebutAlbums2026
I’m not entirely sure that YOU MUST REMEMBER THIS (2020) was Romance’s debut exercise in blurred bliss, but Discogs seems to confirm. Your posts turned me on to them @filthythanks so maybe you would know for sure? #5DebutAlbums2026
Fievel Is Glauque: GOD’S TRASHMEN SENT TO RIGHT THE MESS (2021). A lo-fi preview of what was coming next. Lots to enjoy here but still a work in progress. #5DebutAlbums2026
@AnEarful Is there a reason to consider VULTURE PRINCE as Arooj Aftab’s debut? If so I would vote for it! But she released a few albums earlier. Likewise Cassandra Jenkins had a debut that I listened to in the 15-19 round. (These are two of the few artists on your list who I’ve heard of!)
I’ve been looking forward to this. Only have one album locked in and a lot to revisit, including the one I’m cuing up right now: Kara Jackson’s 2023 debut, WHY DOES THE EARTH GIVE US PEOPLE TO LOVE? #5DebutAlbums2026
The Feelies are probably my favorite band that I could have found a way to see at some point but never managed to, so this @michaelazerrad post really hit a nerve.
@RichardS7370 I threw my top 10 at the wall and these are the 5 that stuck:
1) Le Tigre: Le Tigre
2) Sam Prekop: Sam Prekop
3) Belle and Sebastian: Tigermilk
4) Helium: The Dirt of Luck
5) Sleater-Kinney: Sleater-Kinney

Blonde Redhead’s s/t debut and Helium’s THE DIRT OF LUCK (both 1995) were super-important to me at the time and they still grab me today. I always knew they’d make my top 10 but as of today I have no idea what will make my final cut.

As much of a hardcore fan of The Sea and Cake as I am, it’s the Sam Prekop solo debut (1999) that I would most happily inject into my veins.

Sleater-Kinney’s s/t debut (1995) started out pretty deep on my long-list, but if you want to talk about a kick-ass album that also set the stage for one of the greatest decade-long runs in rock history? I think it might force its way into my top 5.

Two indie rock debuts from Merge that I still find utterly irresistible: Ashley Stove, NEW SCARS (1999), and Spent, SONGS OF DRINKING AND REBELLION (1995). #5DebutAlbums9599
Tonight I’m spending time with debuts from Poem Rocket (INFINITE RETRY ON PARALLEL TIME-OUT, 1997) and The Pacific Ocean (LESS THAN THE NEEDLE, MORE THAN THE SHOTGUN, 1999), who I saw sharing a bill with Seam at The Mercury Lounge in 1998. Memorable evening!
