Although nearly 200 miles (318 km) from U.S. D.o.D. Doppler Radar on Guam, Typhoon Bolaven's eye is clearly visible. Also, as seen in our Sferic Maps application, there is a significant amount of lightning in the eyewall. Both are indicators of possible rapid strengthening.

News agencies are reporting road closures throughout the metropolitan #NewYork area as severe #rain and #flashflooding force road closures. Our Sferic Maps shows that more than 3 inches of rain fell in portions of New York City over a 3-hour period earlier this morning.

Our Sferic Maps show a line of severe #thunderstorms forming from Tennessee to Pennsylvania. Our Meteorological Services team has issued many Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts (DTAs) in connection with the system. The storms may produce #wind, hail, #flashflooding, and #tornados.
On July 9, historic #rain brought deadly flash #flooding to Orange County, New York. An AEM #weatherstation at the #WestPoint U.S. Military Academy detected 7.61 inches of rain, nearly twice the rainfall the area typically receives in the entire month of July.
