Empathy is great. Understanding is great. We need more empathy & understanding, often toward ourselves.
That said: "empathy" & "understanding" for people who were hurting us kept us in some pretty painful or dangerous situations for a long time.
We gotta be prepared to be cool to ourselves, even after we f*ck up. After on sh*tty days. Even when we are so cringe we can't look in a mirror.
If we're serious about self-love, we've gotta commit to it-- even when self-like is in short supply.
When appropriate, apologizing is probably the most badass thing you can do. By all means, be yourself, but when that "self" does something wrong, unkind, or fucking dumb, don't be too self-absorbed to admit it. Not apologizing doesn't make you a badass — it makes you an asshole.
In life, the unexpected quite often becomes exactly what's needed. A sudden shift, a random encounter, an opportunity that seems to come from absolutely nowhere — the best shit comes from unexpected shit if you remain open to it.
To grow, avoid seeking the familiar and embrace the unknown. Create yourself in a new environment, do things you haven't done before, and make the most of whatever shit life has in store. Being homesick or missing friends is hard—but so is remaining the same as you currently are.
Read this the next time you have a disagreement with a lover, a friend, or a family member — actually, it's probably better that you read this beforehand — then, share it with somebody who also needs to read it.
