It is irrelevant how many or what percentage of the population owned slaves. They ALL benefitted from an industrial complex based on free labor. They lived in a system that condoned slavery. One example are slave catchers, they don't own slaves but they sure as he'll survived/made a living out of it. They feed their families through that profession. Other whites did not have to compete with Black's for nothing, like regular jobs that PAYS !! also, all the cotton, sugar, and other stuff earned from slavery was exported for top dollars, which further enriched the whole country/economy.
