I kind of want to be in a book club, but I only want to read the books I want to read. Basically I just want a small group of friends who will read whatever I tell them to. Basically I want a cult
A lot of Twitter/X is just so full on, like carbs are the devil! No, meat is the devil! Etc. Where are my let's just eat mainly real food, get outside and sleep well ppl?
Board games deliver a big ROI for families
A $30 game provides hours of quality family time that promotes healthy competition, problem solving & strategizing.
Highly recommend building the tradition of family game night
Everybody is so up in arms about diet and exercise, arguing over what's the best. How about sleep, sunlight, time spent in nature, having purpose and meaning in life and social connections... Truth is, you don't hear about those things because they aren't as easily commodified.
By far the biggest improvements in my health recently have come not from food, but from focusing on light and electricity.
- barefoot contact with the earth
- swimming in natural bodies of water
- lots of sunlight on my face and skin
- sunrise/sunset outdoors
- avoidance of artificial light whenever possible
It's pretty wild actually. I've noticed that even if I'm not super on point with diet, drinking, etc— as long as I'm getting lots of sunlight exposure and grounding, I feel amazing.
As much as I care about food, it's clear that your body gets energy from more than just the macronutrients you consume. Light diet and exposure to nature are major levers.
In a way it's quite freeing— prioritize those things and you have more room to focus on food as enjoyment, have some wine with dinner, stop worrying about macros, etc.
h/t @SolBrah@casebradford@dranthonygustin@NoahRyanCo and several others for lots of good info and learning on this subject recently.
Anyone have recs for good resources (books, podcasts, follows, etc) where I can learn more about all this?
Made my first orange cake. Why have I not made this before? There's something so satisfying about putting the entire oranges in there. And most importantly, it tastes great!
@ifixhearts So true! I often feel that I probably need to prepare my clients for the fact that when they become truly healthy, they're not going to tolerate things like staying up late eating junk food under artificial lights. It's going to make them feel lousy and they will notice now!
@Mangan150 I recall reading a study years ago where school students who took a standardized test in a classroom with windows looking out to nature did better on the test than those in classrooms with windows looking out to buildings
Patients hospitalized with bipolar depression and put into rooms with eastern-facing windows, so that they had morning sunlight, spent nearly 4 fewer days in the hospital than those in western-facing rooms.
@JDaviesPhD Big Pharma strikes again. I have heard of more and more, ever younger, children being diagnosed. Having seen a few of their lunchboxes, I think the drugs may be missing the mark
@kaz_emalone @grahamsphillips Amen.
In NZ we have a healthy plate model with like 8 different sections and it's meant to be for food over 24 hours instead of one meal...
Speaking as a dietitian, it's the most ridiculous shit I've ever seen.
Definitely more to do with food industry lobbying than health.
@myles_cooks Love this solutions-focused approach! It's so easy to get overwhelmed by the problems and not think about the things you CAN DO that will MAKE A DIFFERENCE
@robertlufkinmd Wow. I am somewhat terrified of the day my eldest starts asking for a phone... I love the slow but steady rise of parents giving their kids text/call only phones. Hopefully it continues
@myles_cooks I switched to stainless steel a few years ago, after reading Exposure! (The movie version is Dark Waters, a great watch). It's been fantastic! If you're scared it will be hard to clean, I can vouch for the ease of it. When it's cool, I just soak in hot water and it's a breeze 👍
