🧠 OSINT INVESTIGATION WORKFLOW
Good OSINT is not just about finding information.
It is about collecting the right data, validating it, connecting it, documenting it, and knowing when the evidence is strong enough to act.
A practical investigation workflow looks like this:
* Scope & Objective — define exactly what you are trying to prove, disprove, or understand
* Collect — gather information from search engines, social platforms, public records, infrastructure data, forums, archives, and other open sources
* Normalize & Organize — remove duplicates, structure findings, tag entities, and preserve source URLs and timestamps
* Analyze — connect people, domains, accounts, infrastructure, locations, and timelines
* Verify & Validate — cross-check important findings with independent sources and separate facts from assumptions
* Report & Document — preserve evidence, explain confidence levels, and clearly document how conclusions were reached
* Monitor & Act — continue watching for new indicators, changes, or supporting evidence
Useful OSINT sources can include:
* Search engines
* Social platforms
* Public records
* News archives
* Forums and communities
* WHOIS, DNS, and IP intelligence
* Maps and satellite imagery
* Public breach datasets
Popular investigation tools include Maltego, SpiderFoot, theHarvester, Shodan, Recon-ng, and Holehe.
⚠️ The most common OSINT mistakes are often analytical rather than technical:
* Relying on a single source
* Ignoring timestamps and context
* Jumping to conclusions
* Treating assumptions as facts
* Poor evidence preservation
* Weak OPSEC
Analyst Note:
The most powerful OSINT tool is not a search engine or framework.
It is a disciplined investigation process.
Collect broadly. Verify independently. Document everything. Protect your OPSEC. And always distinguish what you know from what you think you know.

One dark truth about security research:
The deeper you go, the less you trust what the software tells you.
You stop reading features.
You start reading behavior.
You trace memory, execution flow, hidden logic, and the assumptions buried inside compiled code.
