Local ownership is at the core of how communities thrive.
We know what drives positive changes in local ownership – having more new businesses start in your community annually than those that close down.
Our actions need to prioritize achieving that.
Did you know that Black business owners have on average 12x the net wealth of Black wage-earners?
Black-owned businesses also "have a remarkable multiplier effect in saving jobs and preserving the economic security of families."

This would be a huge boon for ecosystems!
R&D is the single most difficult to replace ingredient in any local entrepreneurial ecosystem. It is too often sequestered in isolated suburban complexes or in small college towns, which can limit local industry interactions & spillover.
Central R&D district: "Research & development, which before was confined to more spacious suburban & rural areas, as comparable to life sciences ...The appeal is about promoting a use that cannot easily be done at home" https://t.co/E0C5E8relR
It’s great to see these projects come together to spur new centers for innovation and economic growth away from the big, expensive cities.
We’ll get South Central PA on one of these announcements sooner or later!
Antitrust enforcers should block this deal. For one, it would give Amazon access to a cache of intimate data that would entrench its dominance. Second, it would allow Amazon to gain structural power in yet another major sector. This is why we have anti-monopoly laws.1/
America is still a Startup Nation. There is hope. Because Americans still dream. Survey data from the @SBAgov shows that, at its heart, America is still a “Startup Nation” inside. That energy is bottled up but is ready to be unleashed.
Jobs clustering is still important (WFH counts, too!), but it’s biggest value has always been the cross-pollination that comes from social relationships spanning organizations.
Vibrant civic space is the magic sauce that spurs agglomeration and spillover effects.
Forget returning to the office. The future of cities lies in vibrant civic spaces: "The idea that downtowns must be so work-centric rather than people-centric is an antiquated Industrial Revolution idea long past its prime" https://t.co/NAIhZLSJhl
A founder reached out to me for feedback on their deck. For founders raising VC 💰 for the first time, it can be intimidating to build out that deck. Here are key slides you should include, in a suggested order!
Last week, an Amazon VP took to an Amazon-run forum for sellers to urge them to contact their senators in opposition to Klobuchar’s self-preferencing bill, and thereby continue Amazon’s “amazing partnership” with sellers.
The responses from sellers are… pretty lively. 1/

“While Mayor, I was often asked ‘how have you been able to afford this in #Copenhagen?’ I’d reply, ‘how have you been able to NOT afford it? 25 years ago we were a few days away from going bankrupt. So the city invested in the cheapest infrastructure — bicycling.” — @mortenkabell

Why do so many independent businesses sell on Amazon's marketplace?
We surveyed 94 Amazon sellers. Only 15% said selling on Amazon was a good opportunity.
63% said "There's no viable alternative; it's the only way to reach most online shoppers. 1/

New 2019 data from Ft Worth shows entrepreneurs created 12,500 jobs while 2390 jobs came from corporate relocations. In short, new companies generated 5.2X more jobs.
It's time for cities to change the way they drive economic growth.
