This was filmed some weeks ago in Texas. The officer in the bed is Officer Mitchell, with PD's K9 Unit. The dog is Rex, his five-year-old Belgian Malinois partner. Nine days ago, Officer Mitchell and Rex responded to a dangerous armed situation. During the encounter, Mitchell was seriously injured. Rushed to emergency surgery. Survived but spent a week in intensive care.
Rex was there when Mitchell went down. Saw his partner collapse. Stayed by Mitchell's side growling at everyone until paramedics convinced him they were helping. Hospital policy doesn't normally allow dogs in patient rooms. But the police department pushed. Said Rex had been inconsolable since Mitchell was taken away. Wouldn't eat. Wouldn't work with other handlers. Just paced and whined constantly. Hospital finally agreed to one visit yesterday. Phone footage filmed by Mitchell's wife shows the door opening. Rex walks in with Officer Davis holding his leash. Rex sees Mitchell in the bed.
Stops. Stares. Like he can't believe it's real. Mitchell extends his arm. "Come here, boy." Rex moves forward carefully. Jumps onto the hospital bed. But watch how gentle he is. Doesn't crash into Mitchell.
Lays down across Mitchell's chest. Carefully avoiding his injuries. Nuzzles close under Mitchell's chin.
Mitchell wraps his arms around Rex. Starts crying. "I missed you too, buddy. I'm okay. I'm okay." Rex presses closer. Doesn't move. Just breathes with Mitchell. Mitchell's wife told us: "Ryan hasn't cried once since the injury. Not during surgery. Not during recovery. But the moment Rex laid on him, Ryan broke down. Rex gave him permission to feel it." Rex visited for an hour. When it was time to leave, Rex refused to get off the bed. They had to coax him down with treats. Mitchell gets released next week.
Goes home to Rex. Sometimes your partner takes a hit for you and all you need is to feel them breathing on your chest to know you're both still here.
