Is Raheem Sterling a complete idiot or a total idiot? He plays in Manchester, where there has been terrible gun crime, and he has a tattoo of a gun on his leg. Worse, is that his father was killed with a gun. It sends out a message to the "youth" of Manchester that guns are cool.
Dear @MattHancock. As Manchester's most prolific tour guide and leading historian, I sincerely hope you'll be making a statement condemning Raheem Sterling. We are working hard to counteract gun violence in Mcr and present a favourable image of the city. His actions ruin this.
@tomritchiemcfc You don't have to take me seriously. It's Manchester history I'm selling not my beliefs. Freedom of choice means the freedom I have to say Sterling is wrong. If you disagree with me that's your freedom of choice. Why let that affect your means of going on brilliant tours?
@althered68@johncrossmirror Completely different. Arsenal come from a state-run institution established to defend the country from invasion (Spain, Napoleon etc.), an unfortunate but necessary body. Black on black gun crime is not a necessary bi-product of society.
@jxshmcfc_ Appalling gun crime that got the city nicknamed "Gunchester". In the Town Hall there is a statue of anti-gun crime campaigner Erinma Bell made of melted-down shotguns.
@tomritchiemcfc Oh I see. You were going to come on a Manchester walk and find out the the most amazing things about the history of the city that nobody else will tell you but now you're going to punish yourself over the disagreement about Sterling's tattoo. Makes about as much sense as his tat
@CoroStreetBlog Hi. Thanks for promo-ing the tour this week. Next one Tue 21 Aug, bookable on eventbrite. (I thought yous was coming along to review?!) Ed
Another successful "Secret History of Manchester" tour completed. 45 charming folk. Highlights: Theresa May's bugged bedroom, the spot where Tony Blair wasn't assassinated, Tony Wilson's drug habits, Lowry's sadistic drawings & the pillar box that DIDN'T survive the IRA bomb.
@ABardsleyMEN Hi Andrew. What I sent is part of a long overdue campaign led by me to make the statuary in Mcr more reflective of the cityโs history of protest & civil rights. This most left-wing has more statues of Tories than socialists; more colonialists than progressives.
@johncrossmirror Not surprised they went cold on Arteta. What has he ever achieved? You don't start your managerial career with Arsenal ffs! It's not like Dalglish at Liverpool. Dalglish had won League titles and European Cups. What has Arteta won?
@ABardsleyMEN Hi Andrew. Here's one for you. With the recent campaigns to change the names of public buildings (named after slavers) and remove statues of the bad guys, here's a new tour of Manchester right on those themes. https://t.co/JxGN3qJpZl Hope you can do a piece -Ed
@johncrossmirror Given that Arsenal have made a series of bad moves in recent years - leaving Highbury, dropping the elegance of Victoria Concordia Crescit, playing in blue f'rchrissakes, refusing to compete for the title - they're bound to appoint the wrong man for the job now.
For those who appreciate #JoyDivision and #IanCurtis: tonight, 5.30pm from the Visitor Centre, the only "Ian Curtis's Manchester" guided tour. Music as well. Where else will you a hear a tour guide play such music?!
Having read the Ned Lebow piece I am even more sympathetic to the complainer. His excuses are poor: "I am 76...it was a lame joke". Too right. It was not funny in any way. He has still missed the point that women do not exist merely to wear lingerie and be lusted after by old men
2 new Peterloo tours as the countdown to #Peterloo200 continues. Sun 30 Sep (nothing like future planning). They are: "Before Peterloo" (protest, injustice, poverty) and "After Peterloo" (protest, injustice, poverty, the Manchester Guardian). Please book on eventbrite.
