Dear Mr. President,

Thank you for writing against the terrible, barbaric act of torture again, as you did in 2017 when many people were being tortured at the infamous Nalufenya detention center.

Just in case you didn’t know, let me join many other Ugandans to bring it to your attention that so many more people have been tortured since then.

I will list some of them but let me start with Sam Mugumya who was disappeared by security operatives a year ago and has never been released or charged in any court of law even when the courts ordered the state to investigate this matter. I also interviewed his 83 year old mother Ednansi Katungwesi who appealed to you to intervene and ensure that her son is taken to prison where she can visit him and ascertain that he is alive, if he committed any crime.
Recently, a video of him surfaced and he has been visibly subjected to torture and inhumane treatment. He was tortured even worse than Nuwagaba (I say that because I interviewed Nuwagaba in 2024) and if Mugumya isn’t released to get the same treatment you offered to Nuwagaba, I am afraid he won’t survive.

Many other Ugandans have been abducted and disappeared and held incommunicado and tortured. The reason suspects are not arrested in accordance with the law and held in gazetted detention is to torture them. Some of those that have been lucky to make it out have told this harrowing tales. Some haven’t been lucky because they have not been seen again for 7,6,5 years. As we speak, countless Ugandans are still held incommunicado including two very young people Christopher Gody (King Zale) and 18 year old William Baliza.

Then there are others whose torture hasn’t even been hidden. Your son the CDF, has publicized it, e.g Eddie Mutwe, Erias Lukwago, etc.

Just in case these had not been brought to your attention, I and many other Ugandans are bringing them to your attention.
Otherwise Ugandans may think you only care about the torture of Nuwagaba who comes from Kiruhura where you also come from and not the plight of so many other parents like the 83 year old mother of Sam Mugumya and of these many other Ugandans that have been tortured.

The DSA is dining on the moment to get themselves attention.
But the spotlight on some of their crazy-ass ideas is unhelpful--not just for Dems but for progressive goals.
You can be for honoring the humanity and value of immigrants, and for blowing up the gangster operation that ICE has become, and still recognize the importance of our borders and the need for appropriate immigration enforcement.
You can be for profound police reforms, alternative policing strategies and an end to mass incarceration, and still recognize that police and policing are necessary and important for the safety of our communities, and that some people commit crimes that warrant prison.
You can be for universal healthcare, climate action, fair wages, tougher regulations and anti-trust enforcement to rein in corporate abuse, and a host of other progressive goals and not be for the government seizing all or part of businesses--though on this, the DSA is making common cause with @realDonaldTrump, who thinks it's fine for the government to grab pieces of major corporations.
You can be opposed to senseless wars and bloated Pentagon budgets and still recognize the need for a well-trained military because there are real threats in the world against which we have to defend.
In their most extreme views, the DSA doesn't represent the majority of Democrats or the country.
But because candidates they've backed have won primaries in isolated places--often by not emphasizing some of their more extrene positions--they are having a moment.
And they have become the boogeymen and women an embattled Republican Party, saddled with an unpopular @POTUS, have seized on to try and deflect attention and hold the Congress.

The standard Mike Johnson line fell out of Marco Rubio’s mouth last month when a congressman asked if it’s okay Trump and his sons enriched themselves by billions while in office — even after being asked directly about the timing of Trump’s own stock purchases, made right before government actions that would benefit them.

Rep. Johnny Olszewski wasn’t buying it. Rubio’s been in the room. He’s seen it.

Johnson says some version of this multiple times a week — CNN even ran a supercut of him saying “I don’t know anything about that” on loop. Now it’s Rubio’s turn to use it.

It’s not ignorance. It’s a script.

Olszewski, meanwhile, has already introduced legislation requiring presidents to use blind trusts and barring them from trading individual stocks.

Because right now, the cowards in charge aren’t stopping any of it.

Sadly, many of the DSA’ers do not simply want the substantial progressive reforms you list here. They are as inflexible as their MAGA counterparts on the right.
Oh, and they seem to prioritize the outright elimination of Israel over all other priorities.

Before he collapsed, he cried out that he was being injured. His sister, Dr Kobusingye, was in court but was not allowed to attend to him.

What happened to KB?
