We love to say we’re building a ‘love of reading’. The evidence suggests we’re doing no such thing. Pleasure doesn’t lead to fluent reading; fluency makes pleasure possible. Reading for pleasure should be an outcome, not a curricular aim. Trying to teach enjoyment is missing the point.

“The most effective teachers ensured that their students efficiently acquired, rehearsed, and connected background knowledge because this knowledge is necessary for skillful problem solving and critical thinking.” B. Rosenshire
As a special education teacher, I have worked primarily with students who are not learning the way they need to learn in the classroom. These kids CAN and DO learn but they often need more retrieval practice of taught skills, more modelling, scaffolded instruction, practice & feedback, as well as more opportunities to practice each skill that’s been taught.
However, this is basically just good instruction and it should be the way ALL students are taught! If we use evidence-based instructional practices in every classroom, maybe we’d have fewer kids labeled as “spec-ed”.
