Only 37% of CA students are performing at grade level in math. A state-wide problem needs a systems-level solution.

SB 1067 requires schools to assess K-2 students' math knowledge and provide evidence-based supports to those in need.

It's now up to the California Assembly Appropriations Committee to move this critical bill forward.

Angela’s passion for activism and education policy was ignited in high school, where she interned for former Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, proposed bills that the Assemblymember carried on her behalf, and worked with civil rights leaders such as Bobby Seale and Dolores Huerta to help mobilize civic engagement and voter efforts.

She joins us after having recently graduated from UCLA where she served as the Communications Associate for Samahang Pilipino Advancing Community Empowerment at UCLA, creating content to help historically underserved high school and community college students access higher education at the UC level. She also held the role of Communications Associate at the Campaign for College Opportunity.

We can't wait for Angela to help uplift the mission and vision of EdVoice.

CA fourth-grade students rank 43rd in the nation in math achievement. As Dr. Klein explains in her op-ed, this isn't a reflection of their abilities, but of a public education system that waits too long to identify and address gaps in students' math knowledge —limiting opportunities in higher education and beyond.

Because of this, EdVoice is proudly sponsoring SB 1067 (Weber Pierson), an early math bill requiring all students in grades K-2 to be assessed and provided evidence-based math supports, as needed.

The bill passed through the Senate unanimously. We implore the Assembly to do the same!
