Jack Gillespie was born in Donegal, Ireland, but he died a great American. We are proud of his service, and thankful for all those who have served today.

That's my oldest brother Dennis, then a commander in the U.S.C.G. reserves, pinning a Silver Star on our father shortly after his 70th birthday about 27 years ago. He had earned the medal more than 40 years earlier in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forest, but had never received it.
