The Prime Minister’s apology on Gaza was a start. But words need to be backed up with decisive action.

That apology isn’t consistent with the Home Office continuing to block the evacuation of dozens of women and children.

It appears that a harsher line is being taken with Palestinian families than with refugees from other countries who are applying for family reunification visas.

I have signed @KimJohnsonMP's letter to the Home Secretary, urging Shabana Mahmood to evacuate all the Palestinians who have permission to come to the UK and to make sure that her policy for legal challenges for Palestinians coming to the UK is the same as that for refugees from other countries.

George Finch, the Reform UK leader of Warwickshire County Council, has been accused of bigotry and censorship after suggesting LGBTQ+ books should be removed from local libraries.
But where exactly does this end? Libraries hold books on socialism and capitalism, atheism and every religion under the sun, evolution, the monarchy, and countless other contested ideas. That’s the point of a library: a place where people encounter perspectives that challenge, stretch, and broaden the mind.
Finch is only 19, and it shows. He may simply not have read enough to grasp how books cultivate critical thinking, empathy, and a more informed, more tolerant society.
Who on earth keeps voting for people this determined to stay ignorant?

BREAKING: JUDGE RULES BARCLAYS SPRAY PAINTERS WILL NOT BE SENTENCED AS TERRORISTS

On Friday 21 August, Judge Altham at Preston Crown Court ruled that a “terrorist connection” will not be added to the criminal damage convictions of five Palestine Action activists, who sprayed red paint and damaged windows of Barclays branch in Burnley. The five will be sentenced on September 4th.

In response to the ruling today, the five defendants, dubbed the ‘Barclays 5’, collectively said:

"We are extremely relieved that the court has seen sense and decided not to sentence us as terrorists, this should never have been an option. We were on trial for charges of criminal damage, for damaging some windows and spraying red paint on a Barclays branch. At no point during the trial were we, or the jury, informed that, if convicted, we could face being sentenced as terrorists.

The state is attempting to equate property damage to the Israeli war machine with terrorism. It began with Justice Johnson's decision to sentence four Palestine Action activists as terrorists, for destroying Israeli quadcopter drones which otherwise would have been used to mass murder Palestinians. His ruling has set a dangerous precedent, which was used by the court to consider sentencing us as terrorists, and could be used to impose terror sentences on hundreds more protestors, despite not being convicted of any terror charges.

A terrorism sentence would not only aggravate our sentence significantly, it would mean we would be imprisoned as terrorists and subject to notification requirements for 15+ years upon release. Those requirements include notifying police of any new address, bank account, phone number, email address, relationship and more. If we failed to do so, even by accident, we would face an additional 5 years in prison.

The proscription of Palestine Action, the arrests of over 3,500 people under the Terrorism Act for holding signs and the sentencing of direct action activists as terrorists, are all tools being used by the state to protect the Israeli weapons industry and continue its role in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The use of counter-terror powers against direct action for Palestine came after extensive lobbying by the Israeli government, Elbit Systems, pro-Israel lobby groups and politicians with vested interests.

The state is doing everything possible to deter direct action for Palestine precisely because it has been so effective against the Israeli war machine, but we could never regret trying to stop a genocide."
