Well.. wait.. let me be clear about what I meant. 😅
I think they're "preserving the OG" in the same sense that some reboots preserve the original while taking a significant detour.
I've mentioned Star Trek (2009) as they quintessential reference here because I think the developers are actually modelling this after that. It seems way way too close in narrative/mechanics to ignore.
So I think they're "preserving OG" just as Hamaguchi says they've incorporated the canonicity of the entire Compilation into Remake -- however, it would also not be accurate to say one story flows into the other in the same linear fashion.
That can only really mean one thing, and one thing only; that Remake is a sequel to OG/AC; in the same way that "Star Trek (2009)" is a reboot (and thus first in it's line of films) but also a sequel to the last Star Trek film which was Star Trek Nemesis.
JJ Abrams reboot was simultaneously Star Trek I but also Star Trek XI...
As far as preserving the OG within the game, I've said for some time I don't expect them to go too far off the rails until the very end of the game.
They could resurrect Aerith in the end credits/post-credits and a great deal of OG's story beats still be preserved. You could even, essentially, have much of the same ending until you get to the point that Meteor hits the Lifestream -- I don't think that will happen at all because that event entails returning to Advent Children, and I do not think we will.
Is that what I would do if I were them? No. I would go off the rails during the Lifestream Sequence and from there on out Part 3 would really be it's own game. I think that'd be far more interesting than a trip down memory lane, and I think it would stand up over the test of time as it's own story instead of impossibly being compared to OG and continuously falling short of it.
So, tl;dr; I think OG being preserved already happened canonically, as Remake is a sequel to CC/OG/AC and takes place in a branching timeline. Hamaguchi has been really clear about this, IMO. I also think, for the sake of nostalgia, a LOT of the story beats will be preserved from OG.
So it will be honored via direct reference repeatedly. That said, I do not expect Revelation to share the same ending. If it were, they would not be going through all of this and there'd be no reason to set up the question only for the answer to be a rope-a-dope letdown.
"There is something in the deepest reaches of our hearts"
Cloud: "I was remembering Aerith. It was as if Aerith was right there. She was so close that I couldn't see her"
Aerith forever engraved in the deepest of Clouds heart❤️
When I started reading this article and catching up on it recently a lot of thoughts came to mind. Hamaguchi just keeps on dropping the gems and I'm loving it. So I just had to cover the entire interview with Hamaguchi in a video. Link below to vid ⬇️
@KenMastersUSA@Ght16Miguel@ffSteeD27 After all this, I'm really hoping that Aerith lives. I just got hooked on this whole game series and story, and I just can’t see them letting her actually die, or stay dead. 'Cause from what I've learned, her staying dead kills the whole theme of changing fate/defying destiny
Cloud: "Aerith spoke to me in my dreams....you left without saying a word, it was so sudden. Sorry I didn't realize sooner Aerith..."
Aerith forever being part of Cloud, his resolve and his motivation🥹❤️
