How does the clubroot pathogen evolve to overcome crop resistance? A global question needed a global collaboration 🌍🧬
Four years ago, this project started with a simple question: Could we bring isolates from other countries into our lab? Luckily, many colleagues from over 20 countries around the world said yes!
Together with Stephen Strelkov and Maxim Prokchorchik, we combined three datasets: 192 isolates from 24 countries and 53 chromosome-level genome assemblies, forming the most comprehensive Plasmodiophora brassicae pangenome to date.
This work, led and central to @asimjaved777 (Bravo 🥳! #ProudPI), with major contributions from Florent, Sandra Gomez, @SohamBio, and many more, reveals:
🧬 Clonal expansion alongside genomic evidence of recombination, consistent with sexual reproduction.
🧬 A hotspot of structural variation and ankyrin-repeat effector diversification on chromosome 17.
🧬 Differences in predicted effector structures and host interactions associated with CRa resistance breakdown.
And chaperones are back in the spotlight! The identification of co-chaperone DJC31 as a candidate effector target builds on our earlier work highlighting ankyrins as a dominant effector family, targeting host translation machinery (See: https://t.co/fwEX1tqKRx).
The main message: even a compact, highly conserved pathogen genome can hold considerable potential for adaptation, with consequences for resistance durability.
This effort received essential support through the CARP program by @canolacouncil funded by @AlbertaCanola , @ManitobaCanola, @SaskOilseeds, and @westerngrains. By @RDARAlberta , @NSERC_CRSNG Discovery and Alliance Programs, Génome Québec Programme d’intégration de la génomique, and by @BioplatformsAus / NCRIS.
Thank you to everyone who made it possible! The final database and sequences will be publicly available upon manuscript acceptance.
Now begin The Hunger Games, a.k.a. The Submission and Revisions Game. 😅 We don’t know where this paper will land, but we are incredibly proud of what we built together.

Super happy our collaborative research is out on BioRxiv. We looked at the global diversity of the clubroot pathogen and found how it adapts to resistant crop deployment. As usual, Australian isolates are unique in their own ways. We will dig into their phylogenomics further soon
It is a pleasure to work together with Edel Perez-Lopez (@Edel_PLopez) and Stephen Strelkov. I am grateful to all the collaborators, the support from SIA (@SiaSydney), SOLES (@SydneySOLES ), Bioplatforms (@BioplatformsAus ) and the Australian growers who shared diseased plants
Great to see this work finally out! This study should serve as a helpful resource in better understanding the clubroot virulence. Cheers to @asimjaved777 and @Edel_PLopez for leading this global effort.
@MUUURTTT@avilewis True. And I agree, each province should have a saying.
What I hate is the constant blame on emigrants. Even Quebec (who control the influx) 😩
When farmers come together, they grow more than just grain-they grow hope! Thank you to all the local growers and ag businesses that participated in the #VegrevilleGrowingProject to produce 10,375 bu of barley on 115 acres of land for the @Foodgrains. This is #CdnAg at its best!
@MUUURTTT@avilewis It will not fixed anything if the government don’t fix it. Literally seeing it in Quebec! Immigration is not the problem, bad management of funds is the problem! Immigrants pay taxes like anybody else!
100%, Quebec already has all those rules, and I dare to say, one of the worst health care systems in all Canada … and yet, the new government somehow managed to campaign against immigrants. The last thing they have to “offer” could be deny public education to immigrants without permanent status … tbd
Had a great time sharing ideas (but mostly learning!) about how we can move innovation from the lab to the table! 🌱🔬🍽️
A real challenge for those of us up in the ivory tower (just kidding, I haven’t made it up there yet! 😅).
A huge thank you to @CamiDRyan for being such an awesome moderator, and to @CropLifeCanada for organizing this fantastic panel and inviting me to be part of the conversation!
Already looking forward to #AmericasAgForum27! 🚀

New preprint alert ! 🚨
Our collaboration with the Nunavik Sentinels program keeps delivering fascinating discoveries!
In our latest preprint, led by Florent Sylvestre, we reconstructed 8 complete mitochondrial genomes from insects collected across the Eastern Canadian Arctic, including 7 leafhopper lineages and one (very unexpected) parasitoid fly.
These discoveries remind us how much remains unknown about northern ecosystems, and why documenting biodiversity is essential as climate change reshapes the Arctic ❄️

A great first day at the Spanish Society of Plant Pathology Congress @SEFitopatologia in Palma de Mallorca! Happy to reconnect with colleagues and friends, meet new people and share our enthusiasm for plant pathology and mycology!

We're receiving corn into the clinic with ear and stalk rots. This week we speak with Tamra Jackson-Ziems and Kyle Broderick of Nebraska Extension. https://t.co/jdo96OXHts
