Portugal and Ukraine are two outposts of continental Europe: the Western and the Eastern.

These were the words with which I addressed parliamentarians from the high rostrum of the Assembly of the Portuguese Republic in Lisbon.

There are four thousand kilometres between Lisbon and Kyiv. But distance does not matter when it comes to shared values: freedom, democracy, dignity, and the right of nations to determine their own future.

I thanked Portugal for all the decisions taken in support of Ukraine, for military, humanitarian, and financial assistance, and for the open hearts shown to Ukrainians fleeing russian bombs and missiles.

When someone could have said, “Ukraine is far away, this is not our war,” Portugal said otherwise: there is no such thing as someone else’s war for freedom.

Today, Ukraine is the Eastern guardian of Europe. On our land runs the line of confrontation between life and death, between the right to choose and totalitarian dictate.

I called on our Portuguese partners not to stop supporting Ukraine. Every air defence system, every artillery shell, every armoured vehicle means saved lives. By helping Ukraine defend itself, Portugal is investing in the security of all Europe — from Kharkiv to the Algarve.

I emphasised: sanctions against russia must become unbearable, and justice must be inevitable. A compromise with a tyrant is always a postponed war.

There is another weapon the kremlin fears in panic. It is Ukraine’s European future. Because Ukraine is Europe. Not only geographically, but also mentally. We are returning home.

We have no right to fatigue until evil is defeated.
