Fedorov is respected by regular soldiers and they think he needs more time to clean up the army which is dysfunctional in many ways westerners don't even know about.

Sacking him would be a huge blow to the morale of the average Ukrainian soldier.

And it will be catastrophic for recruitment because everyone in Ukraine has a friend or family member fighting on the front.

Of all the defense ministers Ukraine has had since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he is the best.

Yes, he is not perfect, but the processes he has started are extremely positive for the military. This is especially evident in the drone sector. The “invisible barriers” facing drone manufacturers disappeared almost immediately, and certification procedures became several times faster. Nothing even close to this happened under Umerov.

Everyone can see the results of ammunition procurement. The cost reductions have been enormous.

You feel the impact of his largely unseen work on Starlink every day when you read how many targets in the temporarily occupied territories and inside Russia have been struck by Ukraine’s Defence Forces using our long-range drones.

Highly qualified professionals have been brought into the ministry’s work. The actions of his team directly reduce Ukrainian losses every single day.

Removing this minister would be a crime.

I would like to publicly state that I think it is a terrible decision by President Zelensky to fire Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

The reforms implemented by Fedorov the last six months have been revolutionary in this war. His dismissal and the halting of his reforms will only weaken the Ukrainian military and help the Russians.

The decision to remove @FedorovMykhailo as Defence Minister is difficult to describe politely.

For once, Ukraine had a defence minister whose reforms were visibly moving in the direction the military had been asking for years and a real attempt to make soldiers’ voices reach the top.

You do not remove that kind of momentum in the middle of a war unless you have an exceptionally good reason. So far, I do not see one.

This looks like a textbook self-inflicted wound: unpopular with the public, badly understood by the military, and damaging to changes that were just starting to move in the right direction.

It takes real talent to make a decision this senseless.

I’m afraid Mykhailo Fedorov may have been the last top-tier civilian executive willing to take on the Ministry of Defense, carry out fundamental reforms, and wage a relentless fight against inefficiency and corruption, at least for the foreseeable future.

I genuinely don’t understand how, after this, anyone else could be persuaded to step into that perpetually stagnant swamp and try to change it.
