@giovannihosang @BalqeesJama@SFU We had the exact same problems setting up a scholarship for Black and Indigenous grad students in our department this past year - roadblocks, delays, surprise last-minute legal rulings. It only stopped when we found people in admin who were willing to go to bat for us.
As a committee we intend to do everything in our power to be a voice within our institution and department against letting the past be swept aside and the present minimized by those who would prefer not to confront it. (7/7)
Today, September 30, marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a holiday created by the Canadian federal government to honour the survivors of the residential school system and all the many children who were sent to these institutions and never returned. (1/7)
In a modern context, our universities are still nestled comfortably on stolen lands, and we as settlers all benefit from a research environment where the coequal development of plans and priorities with Indigenous communities is considered an optional route, not the rule. (6/7)
A BIG thank you to generous donors for making it halfway to our goal!๐ฅณ
