MORE OR LESS? :
PRINCIPLES BEHIND VIDEO EDITING
⁍
Many times I see beginner video editors make the mistake of putting more for less and less for more when editing.
At times, we as video editors may get caught up in our edits and forget the actual aim of edits in a bid to impress ourselves and show off our skill.
⁍
The main aim of editing, adding effects or even motion graphics is to make the viewers watch the videos for a longer period with understanding and to feel the emotion the video is meant to convey.
There are principles that guide video edits. Breaking one or more of them leads to a BUSY/ROWDY video.
So when making your next video, watch out for these ☟
➊ TOO MANY EFFECTS:
- Zooming every second
- Constant transitions
- Excessive motion graphics
- Multiple sound effects per cut and a lot more.
The result - Viewers now pay attention to the effects instead of the message passed.
To solve it - Ask yourself: “Does this effect improve understanding or emotion?
If no, trash it 🗑️
➋ NO VISUAL BREATHING ROOM:
- Text everywhere
- Constant movement (bounces, slides etc)
- No pauses
- Every frame filled with information.
- Emojis, arrows and highlights everywhere.
The result - The human brain needs moments of rest to process information. Without that, the purpose of the video becomes non-existent.
To solve - Alternate high-energy movements with calmer moments.
If every moment is intense, then none of the moments feel intense.
➌ CUTTING TOO FAST:
I see this often on TikTok. Cuts are good but cutting every second or after every sentence does not mean retention.
Viewers need time to absorb information. Sometimes the first sentence sinks in because there was a second one hitting on same point.
To solve - A powerful shot can stay on screen for 3-5 seconds if it is carrying an important information. Cut when the story demands it.
➍ USING EVERY TREND:
- Trending captions
- Trending transitions
- Trending sound effects
- Trending animations
All in one video.
The result - The video loses its identity.
To solve - Choose one or two techniques that fit the most. Sounds that fit your video context, transitions that sit well with the purpose of the video etc.
Not every trend fits the purpose of your video.
