Evelyn de Morgan's "The Gilded Cage" I believe the painting can be interpreted in many ways. For example, some may see chaos outside the window while others see freedom and happiness. However, it can at least be said that the painting in some way represents gender roles.
I'm not completely sure what Edna would say to Tannen. However, based on Edna's interactions with her own husband I believe she would be in favor of women controlling the flow of their conversations with men.
Chopin establishes tone by emphasizing the relationship between Edna and Madame Ratignolle for example when they go to the beach and "walked to be alone" (pg 15)
