🔥 Slayer released 'Hell Awaits' on this day in 1985.
After the band's debut LP, 1983's 'Show No Mercy,' became Metal Blade's highest-selling album to date, label head Brian Slagel decided to put his whole weight behind the band, empowering them with an actual recording budget and several professional producers.
The outcome was an adventurous, sulfur-drenched, Mercyful Fate-worshipping album that set the tone for the even darker and more evil Slayer we all know and love.

ON THIS DAY IN METAL
March 5, 1983 — Metallica bassist Cliff Burton played his first show with the band at The Stone.
Burton had recently joined the group after frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich famously drove to see him perform with his band Trauma — and were blown away by his aggressive bass style and classical influences. His arrival helped shape the sound that would soon appear on Kill ’Em All.
Burton would go on to become one of the most influential bassists in metal history before his tragic death in 1986.
