🇺🇸 The people building artificial intelligence are warning Congress that their own technology could help criminals create biological weapons.

In a rare show of unity, the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind, along with the AI chiefs of Microsoft and Meta, signed a letter urging lawmakers to require safeguards on synthetic DNA and RNA orders.

They warn that the knowledge barriers which have long kept bad actors from building bioweapons could "meaningfully erode" as AI grows more capable.

Their fix is to force suppliers of synthetic genetic material to screen orders for dangerous combinations and verify buyers are legitimate.

Rivals who agree on almost nothing, Sam Altman and Dario Amodei among them, all lined up behind it.

When the architects of a technology start lobbying to be regulated, it's worth paying attention.

Market watchers have predicted that the machines will change the world over the next decade and forecast that the industry will grow 100-fold, as AI’s physical capabilities evolve. One investor said consumer stocks were the path to unlocking value from it.

La nueva encuesta de @HarvardBiz sobre cómo usamos la IA en 2026 rompe un mito: la mayoría no la emplea para “grandes reinvenciones”, sino para cientos de microtareas diarias. Es decir, para resúmenes, borradores, correos, análisis rápidos de datos.

El problema ya no es la adopción, es la calidad del uso. Crece el riesgo de dejar que la IA piense por nosotros (“thinkslop”) y de usarla como soporte emocional sin filtros.

En las empresas, hay mucha actividad y pocos cambios realmente transformadores. La pregunta para líderes y profesionales no es si usar IA, sino cómo evitar convertirla en muleta cognitiva y aprovecharla como palanca de mejor juicio y ambición intelectual.

🚨 "Prophecy: Prediction, Power, and the Fight for the Future, from Ancient Oracles to AI" by @CarissaVeliz is a must-read for everyone interested in AI, and it's my AI Book Club's 38th recommended book:

Carissa is a Professor of Philosophy at Oxford, so, as we would expect, the book is beautifully written and rich in historical and philosophical references, which will help you see recent AI developments through new lenses.

The bridges she builds between the present, the past, and the future (and the mystical idea of 'prophecy') offer an interesting and original framework for understanding the ethical implications of emerging AI systems and the possible futures of AI.

Also, as I recommended last month, don't miss her TED Talk "Beware the Power of Prediction" (available on YouTube). It's a nice warm-up before you start reading the book.
