White non-college men, a more blue collar demographic, and white college+ women, a more upscale one, have come to exist in two polar opposite political and cultural universes:
One thing The Pandemic has brought into sharp relief is the extent to which politics, even at the interpersonal level, is about rewarding friends and punishing enemies.
The notion of "the pursuit of the common good" seems hopelessly naive from this vantage point.
Also...progressives did plenty of insane shit in opposition to Trump! And if you can't imagine them engaging in off-label use or entertaining alternative medical advice/therapy...who do you think is the demo for homeopathy, healing crystals, etc?
People on the right are "more likely to fall for conspiracies" because "conspiracy" is shorthand for hypotheses and even knowledge that come from outside high-status sense-making institutions, basically all of which are presently left-coded or explicitly left-leaning.
It will be fair to cede that RWers are more prone to falling for conspiracy theories the second "the left" gives up its claim to free-thinking, anti-hierarchalism, anti-authoritarianism, etc.
I was profiled by @merionwest: "Robby Soave has a simple request: He wants you to remain calm. After all, things probably are not as bad as you think."
