Now fewer than 60 minutes until we start our engines for this wonderful discussion. Can't wait to join Brian Ingrassia to talk about his exciting new book. @Indy500History lovers, those whose interest is the @shgape, and of course @MwHWG, join the conversation!
Love that this was posted! Mr. DeJernett is a large reason the legendary Ray Crowe decided to matriculate @uindy. This legacy of pioneering @uindy sports in the 1930s is understudied, despite the efforts of colleagues such as @LSondhaus and students such as @liz_alsot.
David DeJernett became the first Black person to win a high school basketball championship when the Washington Hatchets won the @IHSAA1 State title in 1930. He played at @uindy and also professionally. He also was a veteran of World War II. #BlackHistoryMonth
This @davidaldridgedc is getting just praise for helping to retell a story that far too many have ignored. One of the through lines of the story is the Crowe family, Ray and George, both of whom attended Indiana Central (now @uindy), as did Mr. Robertson's brother, Bailey.
ICYMI: Was honored to speak with and chronicle the basketball life of the great Oscar Robertson, who put Indianapolis basketball on the map almost 70 years ago, and who is being honored in this city as it hosts the NBA's All-Star Weekend. In @TheAthletic: https://t.co/QVqhEL5ZW7
Did you know that @Pacers owner Herb Simon could make it rain? TBT to 1984; he joined Mayor Hudnut, @ClarkKelloggCBS, & Jerry Sichting at Firehouse #5 in Indy. Mr. Simon is currently the longest current serving owner in the @NBA. Original @ https://t.co/HcQp1Uvh1p
With #NBAAllStar2024 upon us, one of my favorite images from the last time #Indy hosted the All-Star game. The Big O, Larry Legend, @ClarkKelloggCBS, and the late Mayor Bill. Via @Uindy ICLMA. https://t.co/zDUvHoXZla
Sport as cultural diplomacy: @NBA’s commissioner Adam Silver praises basketball’s ability to bring people together. Packed house for @EconomicClubIN lunch. A delight to rep @Uindyhistpsciir and @INHumanities at this wonderful event!
